UFO Chassis Brake Job

Have any of you UFO owners had to have your brakes (pads, rotors) replaced yet? I heard some brake noise last week so I pulled the wheel liners and had a look at the rotors. The drivers side front was badly grooved , the passenger side was smooth but had many surface cracks.

I took it to a local Workhorse Service Center yesterday and got the bad news today. It need pads and rotors on the front, the rears can go a little longer.

Pads, rotors, seals, etc on the fronts $2100 plus freight. My rig has 75000 miles so curious how long other UFO owners have on their original brakes.

From my research the w24 has the same front brakes as the UFO. Kevin posted a great video showing the front and rear brake replacements. here's the link:

Hi Wayne! Seems pricey to me, but you are in CA, so that may be the best you can do.

I'm just glad to know this "problem" is on your mind, and that evacuating from a fire isn't. Y'all be safe out there!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Roberta. Ed

They are only showing $700 labor on the estimate so that seems reasonable. Current shop rates run $125 to $165 locally for RV / Truck shops, as high as $200 for some autos.

They removed the front and rear tires / wheels for a complete inspection. If anything, the parts seem very high to me. We have has a LOT of MH troubles this year. We were towed 3 times so this just comes at a bad time. LOL

Last Octobers fire were stopped 2 miles from our house so we were prepared to evacuate if necessary. The "Camp" fire in Butte County is where we both grew up, Roberta was living in Paradise when we married. Her former family home is gone but the Church we were married in somehow survived.

When I drove into the shop yesterday there sat a Winne Destination in the same colors as ours, 1st one I have ever seen. The HCU on it had failed, only 9000 miles on it.

Happy Thanksgiving to both of you, we will spend the day with our children and grandchildren so we are truly blessed.

I have 72 K on my brakes, pads have a lot of meat left on them. I tend to drive slower than some and try to time lights, etc. to minimize braking. Engine braking s much as possible on hills.

Wondering if one side of your front caliper pistons were sticking?

Final bill, $2326. $700 labor, rest is parts and tax. 2 rotors $640, pads $471, 2 front seals $222, cleaner; brake fluid; gear oil, $23.

It would be nice to know of another source for parts other than Workhorse.

"Most" of the parts on your chassis are NOT WH specific, get the WH part # and use the internet to find an alternate part#, which will usually show a place where you can purchase the part.

If you can't do the replacement of parts yourself, then you might be out of luck getting cheaper parts, ask your shop if they will install parts you bring to them.

rotors, pads and front seals are NOT WH specific, it is a Dana/Spicer axle, not a WH axle.

As posted earlier, Kevin did a great video on replacement of these parts, and having talked with Kevin he did not pay those prices.

I feel $700 is not out of line for the labor.

I found the rotors for about $80 each and the pads for about $100 per axle. Couldn't find a cross reference for the seals.

I will ask the shop about using these parts when I have the rears done. I think they mentioned Workhorse parts for warranty purposes.

Rotors for $80 each sounds really low to me. I'm pretty sure we paid more than that for the rotors on our Chevy Captiva just a couple months ago.

That may not be the correct rotor. My W24 and W22 have 8 hole rotors.

The rotors bolt to the rear of the "hubs" with 10 bolts. The wheels bolt to the front of the hub with 8 lug nuts.

If you watch the above video at about the 20 minute mark you can see the 10 bolts holding the rotor to the hub.
