UP So Far
We are currently in Williams, AZ for a couple of days. We have made it here in three driving segments. We left central TX for Lubbock and battled wind all the way, rarely using cruise and averaged 6.25 mpg and considered that very good under the circumstances. From Lubbock to Albuquerque, much more hilly but very little wind and we averaged slightly over 8 mpg, about .5 better than average and this was done at an avg altitude over 5,000'. The trip to Williams was a nightmare. We battled mostly cross winds ranging from 30-55 mph (according to wind advisories), almost never got into 5th and still averaged about 6.9 mpg. I'm looking forward to getting into CA (actually I'm not, as I normally try to avoid it like the plague) so I can get to a lower elevation and take advantage of my UP. UP at altitude really doesn't help all that much although there is a slight improvement in power. It's at lower altitudes that it shines for me. So after Yosemite, the trip up to Oregon coast should be a little easier other than a couple of minor hills/mountains.
