While working on a friends 2000 W-20 workhorse MH air conditioner, I noticed that the electric radiator fan did not come on when I turned on the AC. Should it have or does it only come on when the engine gets hot enough?

Thanks in advance for your response.

So your saying that the fan does not come on with the air conditioner?

That is the way it works on my 95. The electric fan only comes on when it is needed as dictated by coolant temperature.

Actually the electric fans are supposed to come on when the A/C high side pressure switch closes. This is at about 235 psi. Here's what the 2003 Workhorse service information says...

Auxiliary Engine Coolant Fan A/C Pressure Switch (Commercial Diesels and all Motorhomes)
The air conditioning (A/C) fan pressure switch is located on top of the receiver dryer. The switch is normally open, but closes as a result of rising pressure. When the switch closes, the fan relay is energized. The switch requires 1620.3 kPa(235 psi)+/- 206.8 kPa (30 psi) to close.

I have noticed on my rig that at an idle, with the A/C on the fans will cycle on and off to cool the condenser and keep high side pressures in check.

On the other hand the fans may also come on at anytime after the engine achieves its operational temperature via the "Auxilliary Engine Coolant Fan Temperature Switch" when needed as auxilliary cooling w/o the AC turned on.

So to summarize.

If the AC is on, the fan can(may) cycle on and off.

Also, if the engine (coolant) temps are high enough (such as climbing a long grade in 2nd gear) the fan may also come on even if the AC is off.

Did I get this right???
