W22 Tie Rod end torque spec?

I am going to replace my tie rod end boot/dust covers as they are long gone.

Was checking through the WH manuals and could not find the torque value for the tie rod end castle nut.

Thanks

Usual install is tight , then tighten some more, until you can install a cotter pin.
In 33 years of automotive repair I never saw a torque value for the tie rod end castle nut .
But now you have me wondering , if I was doing things wrong.

Skip,

That is how I have been doing it for years on my Jeep.

Then yesterday I was changing the bellows on the rack and pinion on the wifes Civic, and it had a torque value for the tie rod ends (36lbs).

I have everything apart right now, just taking a lunch break, if I don't get a response, then I will use the ol tighten it up, then more for the cotter pin.

Will post up pictures tonight

Tie rod boot replaced PICS

Thought I would post a few pictures of the tie rod boot replacement.

#1 Showing the 3 nuts that hold on the rim cover, on mine I could not use a socket to get these off, because the socket is to thick to fit on the nut, I use a big adjustable wrench, these are not that tight compared to the lug nuts.

#2 I had bought this torque multipler last year, and this was the first time I used it, made it real easy to break loose the lug nuts.

#3 Torque multipler in action, I broke lose the lug nuts before lifting the axle.

#4 I did lower the RV jacks to lift the body up to make tire removal easier, then I placed this low profile HF jack to lift the axle up.

#5 After loosening the lugs nuts I used my impact to remove the lug nuts.

#6 Here you can see the tie rod end without the tie rod boot

#7 With the tire removed I took a look at my brake pads, as far as I know these are the original pads, the RV has 34,000 miles, looks pretty good.

#8 Here is the Tie Rod removed

#9 The WH manual, says you need a "special puller" and specifies NOT to use a pickle fork, I used this 2 jaw puller with no problems

#10 Here is the tie rod with the new boot installed, I never did get a torque value, so I tightened it with a torque wrench to 75lbs and tightened to the next hole for the cotter pin.

I used Napa part # 65-1168 tie rod boot.

It took about 2 hours to complete, when I installed the tire, I used my impact to tighten the lug nuts, I am waiting on my torque to come in and then will torque the lugs to 450-500

Yeah I saw that, but I believe that is the nut you tighten after you adjust your tie rod, (the clamp) located on each end of the tie rod,not the castle nut on the actual tie rod

Thank you for this thread it’s very helpful. I did however try to research that part number you gave for the boot kit but couldn’t seem to find it anywhere. Do you know anymore about the boots? Size? Anything that could help me find them?

I apologize, looks like I made a typo.
