W22 Vs W24 question

I will be picking up a new to me 2005 coach in couple days. I am curious as to what makes a W24 chassis a 24,000# GVWR as versus a 22,000# rating for the W22? Is the chassis a beefier chassis? I have been towing my 4100# Jeep Wrangler with the 20,500# GVWR Ford Chassis and I did not experience any problems (none that I knew of anyway).

The W24 pays more than just lip service to its capabilities.

The W24 has 4 primary features that differentiate it from the W22.

The transmission is a 2000 series Allison automatic which has better capabilities to sustain the combination weight rating. (GCWR) 30,000 pounds.

The differential has a power gear which better supports the vehicle weight. (GVWR) 24,000 pounds.

The frame has 1 extra cross member which additionally stiffens the chassis.

The brakes on the W24 compliment the weight carrying and hauling capabilities by being able to bring this machine to a quick stop with its much larger standard 4 piston Arvin Meritor Quadraulic brakes. These brakes are a component of the best hydraulic braking systems currently available on gas powered chassis and are only out performed by the Wabco HPB system on the UFO.

The question should not be so much a versus "VS" because the products are not meant to compete with one another but compliment the lineup of chassis performance by the requirement of the OEM coach builder and customer need.

Preceding the W20-W22 line of products is the W18 which again meets or exceeds the performance required for vehicles in that weight rating. The imperative here is to offer less expensive solutions to coach builders that only need an 18,000 pound vehicle weight rating.

There's also this little thing known as a brake problem on the w22. The second brake recall for wh btw. I would be more concerned if I could stop than how much I could carry, jusy my opinion.

W22

Thanks for the reply's. That pretty much answers my question. I will be picking up the coach maby this weekend or sooner. It is currently at a workhorse facility having the brake recall done. I am assuming that the W22 should have no problem towing my 4100# Jeep too.

codgerbill, No need to assume sir, I expect that your new W22 will be up to the task.

Just please make sure that you use an auxiliary braking system. I use the SMI Stay-In-Play DUO which is completely out of sight and mind but works perfectly each and every time.

Once you've had the recall done don't omit placing yourself on a schedule to replace your brake fluid every 2 years. This is the same recommendation that Ford has as well in their maintenance tables. You could use Ford DOT3 if you want to!
