Workhorse chassis P32032

We have a 2001 Tiffen Allegro, 31' with a workhorse chassis. Our breaks went out several years ago. They actually overheated and the calipers were melting to the rotors. When we called Chevy and they said our model was not covered in any of the recalls. The lady was very rude and would not let us speak to anyone but her.

has anyone else had a problem with this model? Are there any recalls on it?

thanks,

THAT is a typical MODEL number for a P32 chassis. IF it IS a P32 series chassis the sixth position of the VIN # has to be a "3" or a "5". That will confirm it is a P series chassis. NONE of the P32 series used the Bosch-made calipers that were recalled by WCC in September 2010 for ALL of the W-22 series chassis made to date.

"Many" P32 owners complain about the poor performance of their brakes, and I sure you are not alone in having a problem with them, but they were never part of a recall. ASSUMING the caliper hung up (applied) causing the pads to be pushed against the rotor and causing damage to pads and rotor even though you had released the brake pedal pressure, it is th flex hoses that are most likely the culprit. They can fail internally and act like a check valve preventing the pressure to be relieved.
IF you are experiencing a "soft pedal" or one that travels too far, THAT is usually caused by needing to replace the brake fluid (DOT 3) with fresh fluid. Moisture in old fluid can allow "boiling" when the moisture turns to a vapor that isn't compressible, like the fluid is. The result is loss of braking, but easily fixed by replacing the old fluid and bleeding the system to get ALL the air out.

First off why would you call Chevy, they did not build your chassis, Worhorse bought out the Chevrolet motorhome chassis division in 1999, then continued to built the P32 chassis and later introduced their own W series chassis.

As to the rest P32 chassis brake systems need ongoing care, the caliper slides are prone to sticking and should be checked and re-lubricated about ever 2 years, also the brake system is prone to attracting moisture in the brake fluid, so it is a good idea to fully flush the brake system (takes about 2 quarts of brake fluid) every 2 years, some say every year.

Don't forget to flush out the ABS system, which requires either a special Workhorse only programmer, or must be done the manual way using a pair of ABS valve depressors.

We have the P32 chassis and have had problems with sticking calipers at various times. Over the years, I have replaced the calipers on all four corners. Even so, I've still had a couple of sticking brake instances. What I discovered about five years ago, was that the brake slides seem to be where the problem lies,,, at least in my case. As mentioned above, they need cleaning and lubricating every couple or three years. Knocking on wood but I haven't had a problem since I started doing that.

This hasn't been an issue for me but I've also read several times on here, that the brake lines themselves can cause the sticking. They might look good on the outside but go bad internally and act as a check valve that won't allow release of pressure after the brake pedal is released.
