Don`t believe the Allison is built to take the torque.

Buzzzz... wrong answer. The Durmax comes with the Allison 1000 with the grade brake option.

Allison /Duramax

The Allison 1000 was also mated to the 8.1 in the 2500HD truck line.

transmissions are not designed to engines. Look at the T56... comes in vettes, vipers, mustangs...etc.

For purposes of discussion in this topic, Workhorse, the power train is matched to the proper size Allison transmission.

(New) Allison has just released a new 1000 series transmission, the 1350, which allows for a GCWR of 30,000 pounds similiar to the 2000 series transmission which is also rated for 30,000 pounds.

On our Class 6 vehicles the transmission must be capable of handling the input torque from the engine therfore designing a transmission to match the torque is essential.

I was looking at putting a diesel in my zr2 pickup... decided not to because the trans are very different.. a gas engine likes to turn 3 to 5 k rpms... a diesel likes to turn 1.5 to 3 k rpms... shift points are all wrong... But if you change the trans or at least reprogram it would be a good swap.

Along with possibly a rear axle and gear change to take the torque and lower RPM.

Good deal Jon, if it can be done, I'd imagine you could do it provided someone with enough desire and $$$ wants it done. Probably many big obstacles to overcome. I asked the mechanics who changed my 8.1 if they could put a Duramax in there and he said he doubted it would fit through the top of the doghouse hole.
Then you gotta find a diesel generator that would fit where the 5500 Onan is also.
This would be awesome project to put in your blog though.
