The correct part number for the 2003 F-53 is F81Z-7E395-AA, yours is a 2003 because of the transmission in it. The 2004 has a different tranny number, 5R instead of 4R. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued for about 11 years.

Not correct.

I also have a 2005 Fleetwood Southwind with a 2004 F53 Chassis and an E40D transmission.

My shifter cable melted through on the exhaust manifold this weekend as well and I'm having a heck of a time finding a new one.

Sure would like to hear from anyone that has solved this dilemma. I can't believe that they designed that cable to run about 1.5" away from the exhaust manifold.

From what I have been able to find out, the correct Pt# seems to be,
1C3Z-7E395-AA.... and it has been discontinued for some time.

I'm wondering if the 5-speed cable (4U9Z-7E395-AA) might work. The cable doesn't know how many gears it's shifting. It just depends on the cable ends fitting. I'm assuming the length is the same.

A quick follow-up that may (or may not) help someone in the future:

For what it's worth, I was able to repair my Shift Cable 1C3Z-7E395-AA.

As stated, that cable is long since discontinued and I couldn't find anyone that could fabricate a new cable.

My cable had the plastic casing melted off from the hot exhaust manifold. I was fortunate enough that the lengthways steel reinforcement was intact and the inner push/pull cable (the one that moves and does the actual work) was also intact. The reason that the shifter stopped working was because the push/pull cable was no longer encapsulated by the plastic sheaving and would just bulge out between the steel reinforcing strands, instead of moving the shift lever on the transmission.

To resolve the issue, I found some hard plastic 1/4" I.D. tubing and slit it lengthwise with a razor blade. I dowsed the push/pull cable and the inside of the new tubing with dry graphite lubricant and slip the old assembly inside the new plastic tube, through the slit. I then installed 20, S/S mini-clamps over the new plastic tubing so that the inner push/pull cable could not exit through the slit in the new tubing. I probably could have achieved the same result by wrapping the tubing with S/S wire and clamping it at each end but I had the clamps and I didn't have the wire....

I them wrapped the effected part of the cable with fireproof heat insulated shielding and reinstalled. It works perfectly (for now).

This happened on my Allegro 31IA on Workhorse Chassis. Took the cable off and disassembled it, stripping off the nylon inner sheath that had melted, binding it up. Reassembled using lots of grease. Problem solved.
When I see an application like this that failed I don't just throw more of the same parts at it.

This cable did not fail due to a defect in the manufacture of the cable. The cable design was sound. The cable failed due to a defect in the routing of the cable directly next to the exhaust manifold.

Sorry, despite many attempts, I was never able to locate a new shift cable. However, My repair above, is working quite well.

shift cable

found this in my notes: I found the perfect solution from CableCraft. They needed to know what type of ends were needed and the length of the cable. For me, their p/n # was 314 VTT 3-108". This had the ball-stud type of connection on each end and the length was 108". I do not know your set up but my advice would be to remove the existing cable and find a local distributor of Cable Craft and see if they can make up what you need. I chronicled this repair job, with photo's, if you think it would help PM me your email address and I'll send what I have to you. Really, best of luck, this was one of the most frustrating repairs I've ever done because of lack of availability of parts.
