Do it the old fashioned way, write down the miles driven and the gallons used between fill-up, and do the math

MPG Hand calculated

Record 'Start' Mileage at time of fill up
Record 'Stop' Mileage at time of next fill up and number of gallons pumped
Subtract Stop from Start and divide by gallons pump

Repeat over the course of next few fill ups to get hand calculated average
(will vary cause no one fills up same each time but good average can be calculated)

Overhead consoles MPG is 'calculated'

OBD port info is 'calculated'

Fuel gauge indication.......rarely reliable

My 2001 Ford would stay at Full for long periods then drop
My 2007 Didge stays at Full then drops.....if I really fill it up (fuel in inlet pipe)

Yep my 2006 F53 chassis is the same; gauge stays on full for two hours, then drops steadily after that... I installed a ScanGauge2, so I get instant and average mpg that is calculated all the time. I have done numerous tests checking actual miles and gallons against the ScanGauge data and it is within 0.2 mpg. I did do the calibration on it when I first installed it.

linearity has never been a “feature” of Ford fuel gauge.....

You don't. The gauge is only an indicator to advise you when it's time to start considering refueling. Driven a lot of vehicles in my life and not one had a fuel gauge that was in anyway linear or accurate to the tank level markings and of any use for fuel mileage determination.

My experience with my 06 F53 - 1/2 is actually around 1/3 remaining while 1/4 is more like 1/8 based on how much fuel I needed to refill the 70 gallon tank.

Well I guess there is some consistency - my 06 F53 is identical to the above; 1/2 is actually about 1/3 of a tank, and 1/4 is 1/8...

Wow those are some pretty scary numbers, I.always start the hunt for a station.we.can get in and out of at half, now im realizing ive been closer to 1/3 actual.
Cant say ill watch it closer though, im very paranoid about running out, esp. Now days, takes hours to get road safety plans to respond.
Thanks for the info though, will use it wisely.
