2016 F53 tow/haul mode works
I know there's a reported issue with the Tow/Haul mode not working on 16 to 18k chassis not equipped with hydromax brakes.
I drive a very early 2015 build of a 2016 6 speed F53 22k chassis, VIN #0080. The shift cable recall work was done.
I finally had a chance to test it out last weekend and I am happy to report it worked perfectly. The reason I am posting in a new thread is that it worked very differently than has been explained in these, and other, forums.
I was driving with Tow/Haul mode on and cruise control OFF. When I started going down a hill I tapped the brakes and nothing happened.
Needing to slow down I kept the brake pressed and after about 1 second, the engine downshifted. I let go of the brake, pressed again for 1 second, and it down shifted again.
Let us know if those of you had issues get it to work this way.

I have a 2016 22K chassis. That is pretty much the way mine works.

Some of the posters insist cruise has to be on and the speed has to climb past the set point. They also say a tap of the brakes is enough to engage the downshift.

I have never used tow/haul mode, so I have two questions... When it is engaged, how does it function going up the grade? And, will it respond correctly when engaged if the cruise is also engaged? Thx

I know it is supposed to change the shift points but I did not really compare going uphill with it on or off nor did I try it with cruise. I will try it the next time I go camping in that area.
Hopefully somebody else will share their experience with a 2016.

Yeah, we've been down this path. Ours on the heavier chassis work this way. On lighter chassis you can ride the brakes until you're stopped or your brakes catch on fire and it never downshifts.
Here's my post describing the same findings as you.

Eh, no worries man. There's so many discussions of the issue spread across so many threads it's almost impossible to keep it straight.

Mine works with the cruise control off and with the cruise switch on and cruise set button off.

For those of us where it works, is there any reason not to use it all the time? Is mileage hurt?

I usually turn mine on when I need it. Leaving it on causes the transmission to shift at higher RPMs when accelerating. That could be of benefit if the weather is hot and you are driving in in slower traffic. I believe it would tend to keep more coolant running through the engine and increase the transmission fluid running through the trans. I guess leaving it on all the time could affect mileage somewhat. I don't think it would really harm anything, just make things a little bit noisier.
