5r110w transmission servicing time

I need a Mark!

I have a 2014 Newmar Bay Star Sport 2903 on a 2013 Ford F53 20,500 lbs. chassis with 31K miles on her. . . time for a transmission servicing. For the life of me I can't find this external Motorcraft FT-145 transmission filter. What gives? What I have for the job thus far:

- 15 quarts of Motorcraft Mercon LV transmission fluid (I'll probably need 1/2 that)
- FEL-PRO Automatic Transmission Pan Gasket TOS18714, and
- Motorcraft Transmission Filter Kit FT-180

My local Carquest/Advance Auto Parts has them for like $25 but you can get them cheaper off Amazon.

Follow the transmission cooler lines coming out of the passenger side of the transmission forward. At some point they will run into an aluminum canister hanging down like a cow teat. Unscrew it and there you are. Because that filter is in those lines it can be located anywhere between the transmission and the front cooler. Wherever they felt like putting it.

They quit putting external trani. filters on F53s in about 2007. I doubt there is a filter find.

That would make a good explanation for it being hard to find.

If by chance you do have one or for other owners looking to do a DIY filter/fluid change it's on the passenger side just forward of the sway bar end link attachment point on the frame rail. It will be full of oil when you remove it so have a drain pan close. And when reinstalling don't over do it with the "strong arm" torque wrench setting.

Absolutely correct. Mid year 2008 Ford improved the internal filter and deleted the external filter. This greatly improved the filtering capability because now 100% of the fluid goes through a high quality filter. With the external filter only 10% of the cooler flow was filtered, and 100% of the fluid doesn't go to the cooler.

according to the ford manual the transmission service "oil and filter change" is only required after 60000 miles.
