ABS Light

Looking for some advise from fellow DIY folks. I have a 2003 F53 under my Winnie Adenturer 33V. I got an ABS light after the winter slumber, cleaned all 4 ABS sensors, light went off for about 75 ft then came back on. It stayed on for 140 miles so I figure another issue must be at play...

1. Does anyone know how to isolate and test individual sensors?
2. Am I missing something.
3. There is no sensor on the differential, I've crawled all over it to verify...

Thanks in advance,

Fred

You have Four-Channel Anti-Lock Control and no there is no sensor on the differential.
First you need to check to see if you have a DTC for the ABS system.

Yes you can test the sensors:
  • Disconnect: Wheel Speed Sensor.
  • Measure the resistance across the faulted wheel speed sensor terminals.
  • Is the resistance 2430 to 3030 ohms?
  • If yes the sensor is good.
  • If no the sensor is bad.

Bill,

This is great info! I have no DTCs as that was actually the first thing I checked. My multimeter is at the house so I will check when I return.

I figured there wasn't a sensor on the diferential, just kept seeing it referred to when I was researching the issue. Funny thing is, there is one listed in the parts list when I was searching.

I'll get back with my results once I test the sensors.

Fred

There is also a Three-Channel Anti-Lock Control system on some 2003 F53 and they do have a sensor in the differential.

But said you do not have the sensor so that would mean you have the Four-Channel Anti-Lock Control system.

If the ABS light is on, there's a code. Not a powertrain code, but a chassis one. It will direct your troubleshooting to the problem.

Actually, believe it or not, there is no DTC in the system, I ran it twice and also ran two more extensive tests with the reader. Really frustrating because it would make this simpler...

Probably has nothing to do with the ABS, but have your had the cruise control recall done. Its the one where they put a small fuse wire harness on the brake master cylinder.

Unless you ahve an expensive reader, you wont get abs codes. You need an NGS tester for that. I have a bluetooth obd2 device, it does not to abs.

This is possible.

Just so you know, here is where my abs sensor is located. Note that the vertical bar is the sway bar. You can see the bolts on the differential, they face to the front of the coach. I would say the abs sensor is about 12 to 16 inches above the drive shaft.

Thanks for your thoughts, I am using an Innova 4140p Scanner, I will recheck its ABS status but I think it does scan for that.

I have a 4 channel ABS so there is no sensor on the differential.

I am away from home right no so I cannot confirm anything, will post updates later this week.

Sorry, was under the impression you werent sure, after a re-read I missed that part. I do know that the higher-end innova scanners will do ABS. The 3160 does, but the 3120 does not. I was not able to find a 4140p anywhere on the web.

If you have not had the recall done already, you should absolutely do it. This could be your switch starting to leak, and the next step is fire. The abs switch on the master cylinder is live all the time, and when it fails vehicles have burnt down. Have someone disconnect main batteries for now until its checked.

I had the CC switch fail, 2 months ago. Cruise stopped working, but no ABS light. Blew the 2 amp fuse.

Hit a big bump, today, ABS light on now. 3 channel.

Recall done, by previous owner. 99 E450.

Presently in the rig, checked the Master Cylinder and do not see any leaks, presently 140 miles from home, will check on the recall, not sure who will fix it in Memphis (recall that is) as there seems to not be a Ford dealer that can/will work on heavy vehicles....

This rig is used, what does the recall fix look like (does anyone have a photo?) so I can tell if it has been completed?

Thanks,
Fred

If the recall was done, there will be a 3" X 3" red or yellow tag on the wires to the master cylinder switch. The tag has the replacement switch, part number, on it. It also says not to change the 2 nearby fuses if blown, with out changing the switch.

My fuse blew, and I did not get an ABS light.

Only the cruise control stopped working.

If you have the tag and fuses and the cruise control works, that not the ABS problem.

When I checked my VIN, there is no recall on my chassis....
