At 120,000 miles I had front brakes checked today.

We have a 2013 35QBA on a Ford F53 chassis. At 105,00 miles I had the rear pads replaced. The was still a lot of pad less but were over 50% worn. Today I took it to the same shop and he checked the front pads and the had over 50% of the pad left. The rotors were smooth with no ridges.

He told me to come back at 140,000 or oClick image for larger version

Dave,
I was very used to expecting brakes to wear out with the fronts first and rears last. Cars and pickup trucks usually use a 70% 30% split with the fronts wearing out first. With an RV the back is usually heavier but not the total difference we see with RWWD vehicles. Most RV's will wear about 50% front and rear.

When brake pads are replaced the need for a rough surface to allow proper break in is highly recommended. That requires the rotor to be machined. During the break in or burnishing process brake pad material is transferred to the rotors. In addition it requires about 200 starts and stops for that to occur. Nothing special needs to be done during that process but you will end up with much better brakes after the burnishing process is completed.

Don't take my word for it just google " (Brake pad burnishing procedure & (WHY?)" and find out.

Dave,
With 105k on the clock and only 50% down on the pads, it looks like you have learned to "coast'. So many folks have not, and it does make a difference.

One thing to check is if the inner and outer pads are wearing evenly. A sign that the caliper is floating correctly on the disk. Sometimes on MH's from the east coast where rust is a way of life, the calipers will stick on the pins and produce uneven wear.
Congrats on your driving habits....

The inner and outer pads are wearing almost even. The inside pads are just slightly more worn.

Most of the 120,000 miles are highway miles and I keep a safe distance so letting off the throttle usually avoids any brake use.

I think it shouldn't be any problem getting 160,000 miles from the front pads before they get close the wear indicators.

I have 180,000 miles on my old F53. The pads have been changes a couple of times and the calipers rebuilt with metal pistons. The rotors have NEVER be turned. The new pads have seated in, in short order. I have actually locked up my rear brakes in a panic situation. The toad brakes saved the day. No anti-lock on 95 F53s.
Do as your see fit.
