Brake caliper stainless steel clips question

I have a 2000 F53, 20,500# chassis. I have been trying unsuccessfully do determine the correct orientation of the stainless clips that attach to the calipers. These are the clips that the pads ride on. Each wheel has two clips. One has 3 tabs, and one has 2 tabs. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there as to which clip goes on the top and which goes on the bottom. From what I understand (but I'm not sure if this is correct), the clips on the front passenger wheel have the 3 tabs on the bottom, but on the front driver wheel, the 3 tabs are on top.
Does anyone have a definitive answer for this? What is the reason for the different clip designs--they seem to be able to work interchangeably.
