Bob,
Since retirement tinkering is my main job. Just can't do something without trying to make it better.

I know I'm off topic!!!

Today I was working on some wooden doors for an upstairs linen closet for the DW. This project has been going on since before Christmas. I need to drill some holes and install 1 or 2 pocket holes screws to assemble the doors. That required a vacuum of some sort so the journey began.

First I use a shop vac but it was way to noisy. I already have a dust collection system with the main motor outside so it's already quiet. All I had to do was to make fittings to connect to a 4" hole and eventually down to a 1" hole for the Kureg pocket hole jig. Simple use of a very large tapered plastic cup and a 2" shop vac hose did the job. A 2" hole in the bottom of the cup and some electrical or black tape on both ends to seal everything. I already had a 2" fitting that went down to the 1" fitting for the jig. It works like a charm.

I'll leave the conversion fittings in the hose because I've got several extra 2" shop hoses.

Here's a question for you and others. Remember before the current type of black/electrical tape came out we used black cloth type of tape called friction tape. Anybody know why it was called friction tape???

Friction tape is commonly used to improve the grip on various sporting implements, including tennis racquets, baseball bats, and hockey sticks. It is also used similarly on the handlebars of bicycles, dirt bikes, lawnmowers, and other small machines that require gripping or steering.

Friction tape is a type of woven cloth adhesive tape, historically made of cotton, impregnated with a rubber-based adhesive. Sticky on both sides, it is mainly used by electricians to insulate splices in electric wires and cables.[1] The rubber-based adhesive provides a degree of protection from liquids and corrosion, while the cloth mesh protects against punctures and abrasion. It has been universally supplanted by PVC-based electrical tape.

The first use, above is what I had experience with - wrapping hockey stick blades.

Me too! For pick-up hockey games when I was a teen.

OK folks!!! My question was, Why is it called FRICTION TAPE???? It has nothing to do with it's ability to hold things together or even the above mentioned applications for which it was used.

Am I the only guy who knows the answer???? I'll give you until the end of today. Maybe after football is over.

I don't know but found this from findtape .com, includes what Phil-t said: Cohesive fractioned cloth tape, also known as friction tape, is a cloth tape that is frictioned on both sides with adhesive marking for excellent cohesion. It's commonly used as a secondary wrap for electrical maintenance and spot-holding on wire harnesses, but can be used in many environments where you want to enhance friction or grip. For example, many people use this type of tape on hockey stick blades for better puck control.

I know you are all dying to know the answer!!! Well maybe not!!

Years and years ago I was in our basement in a somewhat dark area. I was doing something with some friction tape. When I quickly unrolled the tap I was very surprised to see a visible blueish white light where the tape separated from the roll. It happened every time I quickly pulled more tape from the roll. It was very much the same as static electricity but localized only at the separation on the roll.

It was obviously being created by friction as the tape adhesive separated from the back of the roll. I did think it was kind of cool. It was from that experience I assumed it got it's name FRICTION TAPE. That is just a guess but that's what my Dad and the rest of us called it.

Woohoo!

I got my package from Eric (Skutterdude) today. New front & rear anti-sway bar bushings and a set of plates to do the CHF. Excellent quality, excellent communications with Eric and very fast shipping, as well, I think at a very reasonable price. Now if Winter would just end and Spring arrive I could get the rig out of storage and install them all. Did I mention Winter in this part of thew country is WAY to long...
