"Check Engine Soon"/overdrive "Off" problem

2000, Model 34D, Fleetwood Bounder, V10 Ford/chassis, 34000 miles. New to us 300 miles ago. Love it, but having issue:

Soon after we bought it, on the first camping trip, the "Check Engine Soon" came/stayed on, then, as we were crossing the border, into the U.S. (stop-and-go traffic), the "Off" light on the shift stalk began flashing. The unit drives fine regardless. Once we shut the unit off and turned it back on, the "Off" disappeared, but the "Check Engine.." remained on. Before leaving the campground, the cranking battery went dead and we replaced it, thereby resetting any error codes on the unit computer.

After that, we drove 250 miles without incident, but just as we returned home, both lights came on. We made an appointment, at a local truck shop, to check the codes. When we next started it, to take it in, the CEL remains on, but the "Off" warning was gone.

The shop said they didn't get any 'hard' codes to show on their tester, and we're at a loss to determine the cause(s). They did see a worn wiring plug, and suggested replacing a switch/valve (I can't remember which), and we agreed to go ahead (will be about $500). Now waiting for the results.

In the meantime, anyone out there have a similar problem, with more concrete results. Sorry for the long-winded story; didn't know how else to tell it.

Thanks in advance....drsail

From the west coast.
Can't think of an interconnect between the two lights , But I'd be keeping an eye on the C/T ads for a OBD II code reader on sale , so you can catch it in the act.
I'll see what I can pull up for possibilities.

If you take a min. and from your " User CP" end of the blue bar under you welcome , click" Edit Signature "and enter your coach info and , save changes at the bottom of the page , the info will automatically appear as mine does below and you won't have to type it in every time.

When a CHS light appears it is a result of something failing either temporarily/permanently which causes a rise in emissions. Now if that condition did not occur again for a certain number of starts the code will erase. As you said when you changed the battery you erased the code.

The codes that are set will not tell you exactly what parts to replace or what to fix. They are usually the end result of a malfunction. For example on many of today's vehicles if the gas cap is not tightened correctly when the system checks for a sealed fuel system it may trigger a CES light. When you tighten the cap correctly and the condition does not reoccur the code is erased and the light stays off. There might be more than one cause for a fuel system light to come on. So you have to know what to do next if tightening the fuel cap does not fix the problem.

Today's technicians also have to be smart and should be able to troubleshoot the cause and effect. Yes it's nice to have the codes when they happen. But they will only point you in the right direction. The rest is up to the tech.

I like/prefer the Scan-Gauge system for codes and the ability to monitor many aspects of the engine operation like: coolant temps, transmission fluid temps, engine RPMS, speed, fuel mileage, cylinder head temps, etc.

I found this page for reference once you get a code.
Haven't found a suspect for both lights yet.

When the OD OFF light flashes fast on your shifter that indicates a transmission problem. The check engine light will be commanded on after the DTC is set for the transmission failure. There should have been a DTC stored unless you turn the chassis power off when you leave the coach. The main battery disconnect likely kills all keep alive memory where that DTC is stored. Depending on the tool that shop has, they may not be able to read all transmission DTC's. Many engine DTC's are universal however some of the transmission side is manufacture specific and only a certified scan tool will be able to pick it up. My best advise is to get the light to flash again and take it to a local Ford dealer but do not shut anything off if possible or at least turn off the battery disconnects. Most Ford dealers usually charge between $85-$125 for a quick diag.
