Dropped pan and changed tranny fluid and filters

Today I discovered the 4r100 in our 2001 MH is a remanufactured tranny.

We bought our MH in Aug 2016 with 44k or so miles. It now has 73k, so I decided to drop pan and replace filter. That's when I discovered a remanufactured tag on the tranny, as well as discovered an external Ford tranny filter on return line from cooler.

Did these 4r100 trannies have an earlier than caused them to be replaced?

Hopefully Mark Kovolsky will chime in but yes there was one year of the 4R100 that had a mechanical diode that was prone to failure but I believe it was 2001, is your chassis a 2001or a 2000? Also important is to make sure you are getting ample cooling, in some applications they didn't provide a very big transmission fluid cooler. Another recommendation for the 4R100 is to do a complete flush/change and switch to synthetic fluid, there is a good DIY procedure that Mark created out there on the web.

What does this mean?

The 2001 diesels had a mechanical diode that did fail at low miles. The earliest 2001 V10s were built with the same mechanical diode, but allegedly they were all changed out before initial delivery. I have heard anecdotal stories of a few that slipped out.

Did you also drain the torque converter? That hold almost half of the total fluid. I feel that it is much more important to drain the converter than to change the filter in the pan.

Here is another way that you can change all of the fluid: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...-transmission/

Per VIN decoders, my chassis is a 2001.

Seems I did proof read my question. Should have read:

Did these 4r100 trannies have an issue causing a failure early in 2001?

I looked for the drain plug on torque converter, but didn't find it. Placed a grease mark, bumped key, placed another grease mark, and continued about 12 times. Never did find a drain plug and stopped when I started seeing the grease marks reappear.

Try the procedure I posted above. It will change the fluid in the trans and the torque converter.
