However it seems like you would feel this more in the steering wheel than in the suspension.

Hi,
This is the 1st time I felt this, I thought really thought I got something.
Ice in a pot hole does make sense.

If a tire slipped, the anti-lock brake system could have reacted.

That could explain it also.

I had a very similar problem with this chassis. After being towed 100 miles from Bryce Canyon to the Ford shop we discovered that the fuse for the Cruise Control had fallen out. I noticed the fuse while the tech was connecting the diagnostic connector. When I first noticed the problem I was at a gas station and when I started to move I felt and heard the strange behavior. I thought I had run over something. I called Ford because the chassis was still under warranty, they told me not to move it and made the tow and repair arrangements. But as I mentioned above there really wasn't anything to repair, just a fuse that had fallen out.

I sure would like to understand how the cruise control fuse could cause the described symptoms. I know a lot of seemingly unrelated stuff interacts with other stuff on these computer controlled vehicles but just can't figure how a cruise control fuse could be the culprit.

I think it had something to do with the transmission gear selection functionality. Anyway there was a lot of metal clanking going on under the chassis in the transmission area.. It was a little imbarassing when I spotted the fuse laying on the floor up under the dash and then the problem went away when we reinstalled it.. When i described the problem to the tech on the Ford hot line he never sad to go check the Fuse so I don't feel too bad.

My 2003 F-53 did the same thing. I searched and searched all over the front end. I had, at this time replaced the shocks, installed a Hellwig huge sway bar, auto air bags with self leveling feature, and new Alcoa wheels and tires all around.
Come to find out, it wasn't anything I did, it was some of the floor brackets on each side of the engine that had some broken welds. Got out the grinder, cleaned the areas, welded, no problems.
I am an over builder, and did the same here too. I added some additional braces and extra welds in some spots that should've had them from the factory.
I hope yours is something a lot more simple!!! Good luck
