F53 problems solved

This info is for anyone with a F53 and V10 engine. Bought used 2012 Tiffin Allegro with 6,400 miles on it in Feb 2014. This is my 1st class A. Have driven it 30,000 miles now. If you start seeming to have sluggish performance, consider just going ahead and have the ECM (engine control Module) replaced. May seem like unneeded expense, but after you have spent time and money getting things checked out it will be money well spent. Forget about getting help from Ford - they and the dealers are useless. Currently new ECM's are hard to find. We were going to get ours running and sell it, but runs so good for now we're keeping it and planning a trip. Just my experience, Dave

I think I'm fine now, I would have still needed the ecm replaced to get 5-star.

Glad it worked for you but just blindly changing the ECU without first diagnosing the problems is not going to solve anything other than to lighten your wallet in most cases. The ECU is pretty robust and internal failures are pretty rare. Would you care to elaborate on what problems you were having?

Yeah I was wondering how one would test the ECM. I understand that performance would be down graded but that can be due to a myriad of things. So would an OBD Code scanner be a good tester?

I doubt a generic OBDII will show you much particularly if no codes are set. There are many enhanced obdii readers available that can log\read things like sensor data, fuel trims, etc that could be used to diagnose the issue. If you're in that deep and lack the expertise probably best to take it to a good dyno shop. The average ford dealer has the technology but you just need to find one willing to dig deep.

The ECM has adaptive learning. It may have been driving habits or a faulty sensor that led to poor performance.

All I can really say is that Ford doesn't support the F53 chassis - I called Ford 800 nbr with no real help; called 2 Ford commercial dealers (one gave me nbr for another commercial dealer and they transferred me to the person in their svc dept. that was supposed to work with rv's, who didn't answer and left message and never got called back. Now that mine is running - I hope to use it some and get rid of it. I would not recommend buying a Ford gas motorhome. Also, the new 7.3 gas is not really any better, because it's on the F53 chassis that really wasn't improved much. Get a diesel if you want a class A - Freightliner and Spartan work on their products.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. The F53 is by far the most used chassis with motor homes AFAIK, and it's seemed to be reliable.

Agree. And there are some Ford dealers that work on class A motorhomes, but they are few and far between. I know of one in McHenry IL and one in Phoenix AZ, for example.

Go to https://fordcommercialvehiclecenter.com/

Enter your zip or city and state. Pick it from the list that pops up.

Click the Advanced Filters + button at the top.

Check MOTORHOME - CLASS A at the top right and click the Apply button at the bottom.

Pick one you're interested in and click the More Information button. Scroll to the bottom, just above the Gallery pictures and you'll see the size of their largest service bay and can tell if they can accommodate your rig.

HTH,

Ray

Who in Phoenix?

Hey Shell;

Who in Phoenix works on the F53 chassis? I live in Payson so it would be good to know.

Sounds like you had a bad experience. I’ve had two F-53’s and put a combined 130,000 miles on them. Though I’ve had a few issues along the way my experience with the local Ford RV service dealer has been very positive. For me a a dp just does not meet my needs.

Sanderson Ford in Glendale.

Probably 10 RV bays and RV lifts.

Downside is at this time of year it can be a few weeks to get an appointment.

Heres mine... getting a oil change and service. Its just shy of 40 feet long and its GAS.

And to the OP... Ford does service and support RV's... just not near you I guess? My dealer does everything!

Hope this helps.
