F53 V10 Won't Go Over 10 MPH

My 2001 V10 F53 started bucking, kicking and backfiring Monday as soon as I left the campground and got over 10 mph.

I had to limp back to the campgrounds overflow parking because of it as it was undriveable.

Anyone have know what it could have been? Lets see who comes closest tonight.

Well here's what comes to mind. It sounds like you are getting some spark. Since the V-10 uses a coil over plug or COP it's very unlikely that all 10 coils would go bad at once. Since you drove it in to the CG it's unlikely that your fuel pump just went bad but always possible. Since it was bucking and popping it's probably getting some fuel. The V-10 is a very good engine so I would also rule out a mechanical failure like loss of compression or valve timing.

I would try to pull codes to see if any have been set. While I said that you have spark and fuel there still may be a problem. You may not be getting enough fuel pump pressure to supply sufficient fuel to keep the combustion going. I don't think it's fuel but checking for correct fuel pressure is not difficult and once done that has been eliminated as a source of the problem. A pressure gauge on the fuel rail and just turn on the key. While I have worked on a lot of vehicles I have not worked on to many V-10's.

If fuel pressure is OK you are probably looking at either a defective sensor or the ECM. There are others on these forums that work on these V-10's a lot and will probably weigh in soon. I would try locating some sensor wiring connections and do some wiggling of those harnesses. There are a lot of those sensors under the hood. If you had no problems before maybe a mouse chewed a wire loose. I had that happen on an injector.

That back fire almost sounds like an induction back fire. That is typically caused by low fuel pressure. A gauge will be needed to check fuel pressure though. Have seen debris get by the air filter before with cheap aftermarket filters and that debris will get caught in the MAF. This will cause the voltage reading to be incorrect and the PCM will not know what to do. Unplugging the MAF sensor and redriving is a good way to determine this.

I'd try a new fuel filter first it the cheapest thing to replace and it can cause low fuel pressure at the engine with a good fuel pump.

Pulling the codes would be a good thing to do. Try and find a mobile mechanic to drop by.

We had a similar problem earlier this year. Had a new battery installed at a shop and by the time I got home, our V10 would barely run. I was pretty worried. Had a mobile mech. come out and within minutes after looking at the codes, determined it was simply a loose connector to a sensor on or near the air cleaner intake (I've forgotten exactly what it was). He secured the connector in place good and tight with a couple of zip ties and tape and voila! He only charged $40 too. Has been fine ever since.

(If this is the closest, pm me for our address to send the prize to.)

Start battery had 3 cells fail after it started and overdrew the charging system once engine speed got high enough for the charging system to put out over 14.4 volts and shut down dropping to 6.X volts. I disconnected the start battery and used one of the house batteries in its place to resolve the issue in the field.

No more Walmart Whenever Start batteries for me as this is the third one to fail after one years service. The old Motorcraft start battery was over 6 years in service when it finally died.

The bang when it dropped to 6 volts was like hitting wall and gave such a jolt that I could have dropped the drive shaft or failed some other hard part in the drive train.

I was in Clermont Florida just next to Disney.

Try unplugging the mas air flow sensor. Usually part of the air cleaner assy. This will force PCM into limp mode and should get you home albet a little slower. Also try smacking the bottom of the fuel tank with a small piece of firewood (unlit please). This might clear up a slow fuel pump.

I guess some missed that this is the real answer. Nothing more complicated than a battery going bad after the engine had been started.

Watch out for bargain batteries as they are more prone to this type of failure and cause symptoms of other problems when engine control systems no longer get enough power to function properly.
