Ford F53 Problems Resolved

We have a 2000 Southwind with multiple problems: OD light coming on, engine surging at idle, Service Engine Soon light, engine/transmission fault codes. Mechanic replaced alternator....solved all of our problems. Old one was putting out good voltage but it was 'dirty' with multiple imbedded spikes, RF excessive, basically screwing up all of the computers and sensors. Thanks to all for earlier advice.

That sounds like corroded / dirty battery terminals. Usually the battery acts like a big capacitor, which filters out all the noise, spikes and RF created by the alternator. Did the mechanic clean the the battery posts?

Thanks for posting about this. I had a similar problem with my car but in reverse to yours. Replacing the battery solved it. Apparently the battery had a cell going bad and didn't put out adequate voltage to the engines computer. The minute it'd start the alternator would supply the needed voltage and everything would clear up.

Could also be failing brushes on the rotor in the alternator.
