Ford Recalling Certain F53 Motorhome Chassis

Ford Recalling Certain F53 Motorhome Chassis

Source: RV Business

February 10, 2012 -- Ford is recalling certain F-53 and F-59 stripped-chassis vehicles from the 2011 and 2012 model years to fix a transmission-selector cable that may break. The F53 chassis is typically used as a platform for motorhomes while the F59 is used in commercial trucks, such as delivery vans.

The company said the “prndl” cable that controls the transmission’s gear indicator display can break where it is attached to the transmission control selector arm on the steering column. “Prndl” stands for the park, reverse, neutral drive and low gear positions. If the cable breaks, the gear indicator display in the instrument panel will not move when the driver changes the gear position. This can prevent drivers from knowing whether the vehicle is in park or reverse, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford said it built the affected 2011 chassis from Feb. 1, 2010, through July 1, 2011, and the 2012 models from May 10, 2011, through Oct. 25, 2011. The recall includes 13,239 vehicles.

Under the recall dealers will replace the transmission selector arm assembly and the cable free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March. Owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332.

I’m thinking my 2011 chassis was built before the February date but I’m not sure. I’m also assuming Ford is obligated to contact owners of record directly if their chassis is affected by this recall. My RV is in the barn till May.

I called Ford Today and my coach is included in the recall .They said that the dealers should start getting the parts around the 27th of this month.I called my local dealer and the said if it breaks it is just the display inside would be off. Let say you are in drive it would show you in park. It would still shift but not read the right gear in the desplay. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I haven't received a letter yet, but called Ford to confirm. The needed parts are on order, and it should be ready long before the next season is here.

Thanks for the notice!

Got my letter today from Ford. I had already contacted the Ford Truck Dealer in my area and inquired about the recall. They were clueless at that time about it. I just called them again today and the service advisor said that there was a national backorder on the part(s) and that they would call me when they came in.

Has anyone had this recall done on their RV yet? I called the local Ford dealer this morning and they told me they couldn't do the recall because the moho would have to be put on a lift. I'm wondering if that is true? I guess I'll call Ford customer service and ask 'em.

Got my notice yesterday. The Ford dealer says they need to inspect the vehicle to determine what parts are needed & they will then order the parts from Memphis. Sounds like a 2 part procedure.

Try a Ford Truck dealer. The ones that sell the bigger trucks should be able to do it.

Thanks! Ford Customer Service referred me to a commercial dealership so I'm going to call them tomorrow. Thank goodness they are only about 20 miles away.

Ok, I find that extremely ANNOYING. I called the Ford dealer and was told that we have to take the motorhome to them so they can "verify" the VIN, mileage, etc. before ordering the parts. HUH??? If my VIN needed verifying, why did I get a damn recall letter???

So we will have to pull the motorhome out of storage, drive it 20-25 miles to the dealership so they can LOOK at it, then do it all over again when they receive the parts?? I'm calling Ford again to express my "displeasure" for having to make TWO trips to the dealer for a single aggravating recall. I'm PO'd.

The dealer I went to didn't give me this runaround. But then they don't have the part available. Now I find out that there is a recall on my toad as well. Just call me Lucky.
