You'll notice there is no "red line" on the tachometer on the V-10. That's because the RPMs are limited by the ecm. It shouldn't shut off the engine though - it should start dropping cylinders to prevent over revving the engine and keep the RPMs below 5200. Same thing should happen over 75mph - at least on the earlier models.

Does your air box use the round cone style air filter?

If so, I have seen where the black plastic end of the filter comes off the paper element and falls into the air filter housing. Everything is fine til the engine revs up, the suction causes the black plastic thing to get sucked past the paper element into the air flow meter tube blocking the air into the engine. It kills the engine. When you stop the plastic falls down laying inside the filter element.

The engine will start again, and will function normally til the next time it downshifts and revs up sucking the plastic back into the tube. But if you drive easy, like less than half throttle it drives normal.

I doubt the check engine light will come on for this type of failure. Maybe for an air flow meter code.

I actually had a Ford Taurus that acted like that. Spent tons on it, ready to send it to the boneyard. Last ditch effort I threw a $30 used fuel pump. Ran another 120,000 miles.

My 2000 HR started acting the same way. I went right to the fuel filter, it was partially plugged, replaced filter and fuel pump, reset the computer and away it went.
Further RECOMMEND that anytime a device such as Fuel PUMP is suspect and a small CUBE RELAY is involved, replace the RELAY FIRST. Replaced FOUR fuel pumps on vehicles over the years, week or two later (on 2 of 4) had to replace the RELAY ...

I can’t believe the Ford techs are not testing fuel pressure and other sensors before replacing a PCM. Then communicating with Ford in Detroit no one has asked what the fuel pressure is? No way. No how.

Then I found that the 2012-2013 V-10 has no replaceable fuel filter. It’s incorporated with the in tank fuel pump. Matter of fact my 2017 is the same. My 99 E-350 V-10 had an outside filter on the frame near the engine.

No, not the same.

4 speed OD OFF means 4th gear ( OD ) is off. Now a 3 speed transmission. Nothing else.

Tow Haul " ON " uses all 5 programmed gears, including the overdrive gear. It changes the shift pattern for a more aggressive operation and gives you downshifts while braking.

Thanks for all the help! I'm home now, with a working V-10. Problem was some chafing in a wiring harness. I'll recheck the receipt to see if I can find the details. I got out of there as quickly as I could to get back home again! Thanks to all!

It does have a tow\haul switch but it does not lock out overdrive. Just changes the shifting pattern.
