Ford V10 Clicking/Knocking noise

Hello,

I have a class A, 2015 with 20k miles on it. I just noticed the engine has a very apparent knocking or ticking noise at idle. Under power you dont hear it as much but you most certainly do at idle. Spark plugs look fine. Any ideas???

Also, my 5-year warranty was up last July, do you think Ford would still consider a warranty repair because the miles are so low?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Possibly valve lifters slow to pump up. Put a quart of Shaler Rislone in oil to clean up lifters, this is a strong detergent that has proven itself for over 60 years.

I think there is more of a chance that the high temperature in Dallas will hit 98 degrees tomorrow than Ford honoring a warranty after it expires.

Several owners recently posting they found their year/ model V-10 Ford had removed a smooth-faced idler pulley for the serpentine, certain RPM creating clicks that originally thought to be valve clatter. They installed the idler and bolt ($10+/-?) (hole is there) and noise gone. I have had several vehicles w/ strange noises that new serpentine cured, so would suggest that first. (10-minutes, $12-$40 (by Brand) DIY). ADD Idler, if missing?

1713 is right. Change the belt to a Continental cross cut belt. Your noise will go away.

This thread describes the noise THenne1713 is referring to. It happens at 2100rpm though rather than idle.

This YouTube video has the noise that those of us with this problem were hearing at 2100rpm.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for uploading that video! Unfortunately, my sound is completely different. Mine is more like a tick, tick, tick that follows the rhythm of the engine compression at idle. Going to take it to Ford next week and cross my fingers.

Rob Whit,

We have a clicking sound when the engine is cold, it goes away (or at least we can not hear it anymore) once the engine is warmed up. It appears to be on the passenger side of the engine.

If the RV is driven right away, the clicking intervals increase with RPM and get louder.

Our chassis is dealership maintained, Ford mechanic stated they never found anything that would need attention.

Not satisfying, I know. We had this noise for a long time now (>5 years and >50,000 miles), and no issues whatsoever. Over 180,000 miles and running strong.

By now we are used to start it up and let it run for a couple minutes, the noise then goes away. There is nothing else we can do.

But it would be interesting to me, (and maybe you?) to see if you have a model that the DRIVER SIDE IDLER pulley was removed by factory... and to see if adding that pulley back would cure that issue? I ordered mine, waiting on it to arrive ($20+/- Rock auto) I bought Two pulleys: $6 Parts +$2 tax + $12 USPS for one w/ shoulder bolt

If the tick is truly INTERNAL TO ENGINE, maybe simple lifter click, and I had a car years ago that 4-8-ounces MARVEL MYSTERY OIL would remove the click; (Hydraulic Lifters) oil change would always bring it back, and adding MMO would always make it disappear again.

and as a side note, Once had a Buick V-6, getting ready for trip, wife said get that noise fixed today, so bad weather and not having time, took t0 dealer ended up 5-hours later $600 poorer for what I think should have been a simple 10-min SERPENTINE CHANGE, but now also had new water jacket/ tensioner and antifreeze change, etc (tensioner built onto water jacket); a few years later when noise returned, (Book said you had to jack up engine and remove motor mount/ bolts, etc.(Belt went THRU the motor mount) and I said "No engineer so stupid"; wiped away grease, accessed a (bolt thru a spacer) from wheel well after removing plastic panel, and finished (10-min/ $20-$30 later). That noise too, was the serpentine.

Check for an exhaust manifold crack (or gasket leak). It will make that ticking sound that increases as RPMs increase. When the engine warms the sound may not be as prominent or go away because the heat will cause the metal to expand and close up the crack. Had that situation on two different vehicles I owned in the past.

X2 on exhaust crack. Exact same symptoms on mine turned out to be broken exhaust manifold studs. A known and common issue on the V-10.
