Under strain - both accelerating and decelerating - my 7.3 produces a fairly loud raspy sound roughly between 2000-3000 RPM. Under deceleration it reminds me of a jake brake.
Light accel or decel, or outside that range it sounds like any other "normal" gas engine.
Is this normal? It's been that way since we got it with approx 12k miles and is unchanged in the 3k we've owned it.

Have you taken it to the dealer for a check up of the exhaust system, does it perform otherwise in a proper manner and have no other issues?
