Where did Waiter 21 come from?
Air Force, that was the code name given to me by my peers. While on Alert, I'd often go get coffee and ask anyone else if they wanted any... They started calling me Waiter..

You really have to pull trans and change the front pump seal.

Update

I have about decided to go ahead and just rebuild the whole transmission rather than just replace the front seal. According to many post from transmission folks, the 4R100 has some weak spots that are updated in the rebuild kits. I found a transmission shop that will remove, rebuild and reinstall the transmission for 1800 dollars. This includes all parts. But, and there is always a but. The shop is at the edge of a rough black area of town with a lot of crime. The motorhome is too large for his building and will have to sit outside. There is no fence or security devices. I will let you know what I decide. Waiter 21: You came through again. I saw a post of yours and have been looking for the fluid bypass rebuild kit. I could not find it on the Summit site. I read your post and enlarged the picture of the kit you used. Got the number from the picture and am now heading to Summit for the parts kit. ($12.46)

You could find a truck shop that you feel safer with, have them remove the transmission, deliver to rebuild man, then reinstall. That's what I did once.

transmission update

It has been over a month since my transmission problems erupted. I finally drove it to our shop today and dropped the transmission. We took the transmission to town for the rebuild. I decided to go for a complete rebuild. I wanted the rebuilder to do everything, but was afraid to leave it in an unfenced area for a week. We will be reinstalling it as soon as the rebuild is completed. I will post the final results when we get it reinstalled and have a test trip.

I guess it is best to be safe. A rebuild should be the best route.

Very interesting 21 post thread. Another reason I love this forum. So many quality, knowledgeable, very well informed folks who love to help and share.

When several folks put their heads together there's no telling the actual number of years of shared knowledge involved. WOW!!!!

Many, many thanks for the quality read!!!!

Update number 2. I picked up my transmission today.. thank goodness I went with the rebuild. 3rd gear bands were burnt. Two gears had cracked teeth. The tech was great. He had the torque converter rebuilt. Everone though 1400.00 out the door was a great price.

Finale update

The shop has been busy, but I finally got the transmission installed yesterday. Went for a test drive and transmission worked great. It seemed like it is not shifting down on every tiny hill like it did before. One of the updates maybe? I am soooooo glad I decided to do a complete rebuild. 1400.00 dollars for the rebuild and a torque converter rebuild. 500.00 dollars to the shop for r&r. 100.00 dollars for fluid. 2000.00 dollars total. Not bad from what I have heard from others on this forum. Thanks to all for your inputs.

There is one thing I discovered during this transmission fiasco. The parking brake on the 1999 and later F53 is not a auto apply. It is a simple manual apply foot applied brake. There is no hydraulic parts. BUT, and as I said in an earlier post there is always a but. There is bearing in the housing. The bearing is lubricated with transmission fluid. The housing holds 4 ounces of transmission fluid. The plug is on the drivers side and should be checked at least annually. Simply remove the plug and a small amount of fliud should dribble out. If it is low, fill until it overflows. If this bearing runs dry it will destroy itself and can take out the transmission.

Just returned from a trip to pigeon forge. The transmission did great. No problems. It seemed to shift less on small hills..Maybe one of the upgrades? Right now a happy camper.
