Need help with transmission code retrieval and OBDii tool.
The last two times I've driven my 1999 F53 motorhome with 4r100 transmission, when at a stop there is a subtle feeling as if the transmission slipped into neutral. Then with the brake is release and it starts rolling there is a slight bump or jerk as if putting the transmission into drive. No check engine lights. Fluid is clean and full.
I wanted to start by seeing if there are any transmission codes but my OBDii scanner does engine emissions and abs codes only. I see these wifi OBDii scanner/readers on ebay and amazon. Can I connect via an app like Torque Pro or Forscan to see and clear transmission codes? Ideally the app would also run an iPad where I could set up to show vehicle speed, transmission temp, percent throttle position, etc. as the steering wheel covers my gauges when in driving position.
Which readers and apps do you guys recommend I try?
And if you have any idea why my transmission might feel like it occasionally slips out of 1st gear while at a stop my ears are open. Thanks.

Some talk about deep sump pans, and shallow sump filters being installed when fluid is changed.
It may suck some air while stopping.

Can't speak to this chassis/year specifically but diagnostics/OBD bus for the driveline/powertrain lagged that of OBD II for the ECM especially for trucks and varies between manufacturers, models and model years. One would have to verify there is actually the ability to see powertrain via OBD for a given chassis. My guess for a 1999 model year there wouldn't be, but that's just a guess.

I highly recommend Forscan. That will read the transmission codes, which are available through OBDII in your 1999.
Have you checked the trans fluid level? You need to check it with the trans warmed up (driven at least 10 miles) and the engine idling with the trans in park. Low trans fluid can cause this to happen.

I did check the fluid after 30 mile drive. Transmission fluid was near the top of the hot safe range. Fluid and filter have 5,000 miles on it.
Will OBDLink MX+ work with Forscan? If not, what dongle or cable is needed to run Forscan? Thanks

Could a wheel speed sensor cause stated problem? Although there was no check engine light, I found the code P0503 Vehicle Speed Sensor A, Intermittent/Erratic/High. Is that the sensor on top of the rear axle differential?
Thanks again.

Yes. Don't know if it will read transmission codes.

If it works with Forscan it will read transmission codes.

Great scanner, I have had a few junk ones, mx+ is solid, pulls all modules on all can networks, the pids seem to work really well. Pay the 5 bucks or so for the forscan pro, you will be glad you did.

UPDATE:
I replaced the speed sensor on the differential and test drove (had P0503 code stored.) I had an obd2 scanner attached while driving and noted the vehicle speed. A few times at a stop the scanner would indicate improperly....8, 16, 32, 24...all while at a stop. The dash speedometer remained at 0 when stopped. The scanner seemed to show accurate vehicle speeds while in motion. I'm suspecting either the electrical interference as noted in the Technical Service Bulletin which someone already mentioned above, or one of the front wheel speed sensors. My plan is to perform a repair similar to Waiter21's repair detailed on his website. If that doesn't resolve the problem then I may replace the front wheel speed sensors.
I find it interesting that the obd2 scanner and the instrument cluster speedometer gave separate readings. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know which wheel speed sensor feeds the gauge and which sends signal to obd2 port?

Run your VIN # in a Auto parts supplier.
My 1999 had a speed sensor in the transmission tail shaft near the top, along with the antilock sensor on top of the rear diff.

The OBDII port is reading the sensor on the rear differential.

If your getting speed indication at a stop, you have a bad spark plug or coil on plug boot issue, I have seen this a couple of times, super high stray voltage (RF) will generate a speed signal. I had one F53 in CA that would not go past 45 mph, Ford IDS tool said it was going 112mph, return to a stop and engine computer (pcm) was reading 18mph at a stop. We found a cracked spark plug., no indication of a miss, nor did mode 6 indicate a miss fire. WEIRD
