Needed catalytic converter

I have a Fleetwood Bounder on a Ford 550 6.8 V 10 and my catalytic converter on the exhaust system is growling at startup. I believe that the insides are breaking up and when the system heats up the growling stops. I am still getting good exhaust and it is running fine, but I have started looking for a replacement. The unit has a gasket on one end that has 4 bolts holding it up front, it is 32" long and the main body is 24". The rear end just slides into the tail pipe. Ford says this unit is no longer in production. Has anyone had to replace their Catalytic Converter? Were you able to find an after market or did you have to weld some generic in the system. How has someone resolved this issue. I believe that if I could find the right product I could replace it myself.

Start calling junk yards, that's where thieves sell them, be prepared for sticker shock.

What yr? I thought it was federal law that emission parts must be available for 10yrs min.. and if your is coming apart inside... where do you think all that trash is going ?.. inside of muffler.. they get caught inside the inner baffles.. and create back pressure.. and back pressure burns out valves.. so upgrade.. check and see if you have post cat o2 sensor.. if not.. well guess it's got to go.. but your muffler is trash.. upgrade that too.. just and idea.. if there was no post o2.. and it's a straight pipe to muffler.. but muffler is trash.. maybe someone could pull muffler and dump n trash.. and finish the job already I progress.. empty cat. Happy home.. then glass pack.. straight through.. might save your valves.. but you have to keep your eng in top tune.. if your lazy and don't do good.. very close eng maintenance.. then you will pollute.. no good.. but no one will know the cats are good and empty.. there is like a 5yr warranty.. maybe 10 in some states.. keep us posted.. I had same problem when cats 1st came out.. eng got to running so bogged down.. pulled muffler and dumped it out.. and cat trash was all in muffler.. but muffler has so many baffles and insulation.. all the beating cussing.. jumping up and down with muffler in my hands... could not get enough cat trash out to get muffler to work.. so all new exhaust system.. .. but kept empty cat.. on.. why. 1st they are S.S. steel.. just about bullet proof.. and prying eyes of gov. It looks still on.. and it passes.. so.. empty cats.. happy home.. purring eng.. keep us posted.. but eventually you will burn a or many valves.. that just my opinion.. and I have seen it 1st hand..

Our local muffler shop put a hi-flow cat on my V-10. He stated it was the minimum he could do to stay legal. Sounds great. Don't worry, your shop can modify any mounting hurdles.

Just gut it. Even if I were installing a brand new one, I would still gut it.
