Power steering fluid maintenance

Every year I change a quart of power steering fluid to keep things clean and tidy. Here is a video on how I do this....pretty easy maintenance.

I just did mine today on my Freightliner chassis. Used an outboard fuel line/primer bulb pump to empty it. Holds 1 1/2 quarts. Was goin to use a turkey baster (like brake fluid changing) but remembered I had a couple of these pumps.

So while changing the filter, I drained it, replaced the filter (mounted inside the reservoir on this system), filled it, ran it for a while and then swapped out and other 1.5 quarts. Easy to do and cheap insurance. And the old stuff was pretty murky.

I bought the coach in May with 17k on it, and Im sure it was the original 2016 fluid. Probably 2015 since the chassis is older than the build date. Now it has 30k and it was time.

That idea is a great reminder of what I have to do. I've done just what you did on my old 2001 Ford Ranger. I bought it about 4 years ago. It had 100,010 when I drove it home. I flushed the power steering pump. For some reason I haven't done it on the RV and I should. Thanks for the reminder of how easy it really is.

Since I haven't yet done this on the RV I'll do what I did on the Ranger. I'll drain a quart then replace the quart. Repeat this maybe 2 more but take it for a drive into town and do the second flush. I've got to fill with gas and propane anyway. This allows the fluid to mix well. When it's done 2 more times the fluids probably fairly clean and then doing it once or more a year will or should keep it that way.

The fluid isn't that expensive so doing say 3 quarts once then a new quart maybe twice a year is good preventive maintenance. My quess is like oil there may be some special additives used in the Mercon V that are designed to help preserve rubber seals. And like a lot of those additives they wear out with time. Renewing them twice a year sure can't hurt anything.

Mine uses Dextron, but yes, its cheap and I probably have 30 qts sitting on the shelf, so why not? And after refreshing it, it looked quite clear in the reservoir compared to before. And of course the old atf will get burned as fuel in my tractor along with waste oil. So no waste.

x2 on changing power steering fluid. My power steering was starting to develop quite a whine when turning at a dead stop, so I did a couple flushes with new ATF as described below, and the whine in my power steering pump quit, and runs beautifully silent now!

TIP: Few years back, Researching Power Steering noise on my 10yo+/70k+miles Chrysler T&C, found RESERVOIR/ FILTER and FLUID change recommended at 30k, AND A DIY FLUID/ Reservoir/filter change did CURE the noise issue... pump not required, here I am now about 3-yrs later...
