Power Steering Whining in 2020 F53 V8

Hey All,

I have a relatively new 2020 F53 7.3L V8 with ~7,500 miles on it. I've checked all of the fluids, specifically the power steering reservoir which is showing max fill on the dipstick, but I'm getting a terrible whining noise from the steering column both when turning and even while sitting stationary.

I've read this could be caused by aeration in the power steering fluid, which will then interact poorly with the power steering pump, but fluid looks normal color and was probably changed within the past year if not more recently.

Any thoughts on what this could be?

At normal operating temp, look in the power steering reservoir and see if you have bubbles while it running. Nouse is generally caused be areation of fluid, in most cases the power steering pump front seal is sucking in air.

It may not be the PS unit.
Look at the main belt very closely for abnormal wear. Or you could have a pulley misalignment or perhaps a faulty belt tenstioner. With the engine running, AC and heating off, with the hood up, look and listen carefully and try to determine exactly where the sound is coming from while someone else gently turns the wheel. You might also want to crawl under the front of the chassis and look up under the engine to see there's any rubbing going on, leaking fluids etc, etc.

I'd buy yourself an automotive stethoscope which can more easily locate those types of noises. Before somebody decided to make one for us we either inserted the plastic end of a screwdriver into our ear and could pinpoint noises more easily.

I really don't believe it's necessary for me to tell you not to insert the pointed end into your ear? However in this day and age maybe I'm incorrect. After all how many times have you called your DR about an appointment and got the message, "If this is an emergency please hang up and call 911?"

I've inquired why they put that on and their answer was simple. You'd be surprised how many really did need to call 911 and just called the DR instead. WOW!!! But then again that should be no surprise.
