Question for Ford V10 owners who change their own oil

I routinely change my own oil and filter on my Tiffin Open Road 2017. I noticed at the last oil change when I installed the new OEM oil filter (Motorcraft FL820-S) that upon tightening the upper rim of the oil filter did not fit flush against the oil filter housing --- never noticed this before --- is the right or maybe the filter is defective??? Did not have leaks and it appears (other than the aforementioned gap) to be correctly installed. Thanks for your comments.

I had this happen also. Check to see if the rubber gasket from the old filter is stuck in place. In other words, it did not come off when you removed the old filter.

That was the first thing I checked --- the gasket indeed came off with the old filter! thanks for the suggestion... But my question is should the filter fit flush?
I'm trying to find out before I throw in the towel and drain the new oil and replace the filter with another one. thanks again...

First off, you don't need to drain the oil to change the filter.

Second, no there will be no metal to metal contact between the filter and base.

Yep, make sure you didn't double gasket the filter and there are no leaks and you should be good to go. You might want to remove the filter and make sure it didn't come with a double gasket from the factory. I saw that once when I worked for Chrysler.
Also, as already stated, the metal can will not touch the filter housing when tightened because of the gasket.

I used a Mobil 1 filter last time, and it didn't pull up like I expected. There was nothing wrong; it just didn't pull up as far as I would have thought it would. But it didn't leak, and 4500 miles later it's still not leaking.

When I first saw the thread title I thought it was probably another tread asking "How the heck do you pour the new oil in?"

Thanks to all for the replies and yes refilling the oil is a challenge. I funnel oil from the 5 quart jug into the 1 quart jug and fill -- slowly -- with a funnel. This part takes longer than replacing the oil filter. then I get to wrestle the air filter out of the filter box!

Safe travels...

I do the quart bottle too except I screw one of these to the top of the bottle and squirt it in.

Sorry for the subject change.

I use a $7. drill pump and cordless drill to refill my oil.

A few feet of old garden hose on each side of the pump and the oil is in, in 2 minutes.

I'm buying a pump tomorrow --- that's the ticket.
Thanks to everyone for the advice, this has been helpful...

How about this one since the battery is right in front of the oil fill stem?

You do NOT want the metal can to hit bottom BEFORE the gasket is tight, or it would be loose and LEAK and NOT tighten properly... the gap is the gasket= as long as no leak,= there is NO HARM, even IF two gaskets

Look at a new filter. You can see there is a groove the gasket fits in. It keeps the pressure from blowing out the seal. If you have two seals, the old seal will blow out under pressure. I had several customers who did this.

For sure. That second gasket has no support and is very iffy. I did that years ago, and luckily the new filter leaked immediately.

I know there should be no metal to metal. The Mobil 1 just didn't feel right, and it looked like it was seated farther away than normal. I pulled it, made sure the gasket was in place, and reinstalled. No leaks, but I kept it watched closely for a while.
