Rate Your Ride...Ford Gassers

On a scale of 1 to 5 - Be Honest with your vote, and if you could post what upgrades you have done:

  1. All over the road, wonders to the low point of the road, 18 wheelers push me to other lanes, small amounts of wind push me to other lanes, HATE driving it
  2. I don't hate driving it, but I'm all over the road and I'm constantly correcting for winds and trucks passing me
  3. I do get pushed by winds and 18 wheelers, but MANAGABLE to stay in lane, it is what it is, a "Sailboat"
  4. Very little push by 18 wheelers and winds, hands off driving for the most part unless I get caught off guard by gusts of winds
  5. As good as it's going to get, do not need to correct for 18 wheelers passing me, only hurricane winds push the coach, very HAPPY and comfortable to ride, will track straight with gust of winds and fast 18 wheelers passing me...totally hands off

I'll start with ours which is pretty good, but could be better. I have a TigerTrak, both front and rear CHF with Hellwigs up front and tire pressure where it likes it. Whenever I see an 18 wheeler hauling arse about to pass me, I have to correct a tiny bit. It handles pretty good in winds. However, in certain mountain areas while going through what I call zig zag winds (gusts from the left and right without notice), it does feel like a boat as the body rolls left and right.

I did the CHF and added a rear trac bar and added a steer safe stabilizer to the front steering. Handles great, no more push and pull effect from passing semi's and very little if any cross wind problems..

Haven't done a thing to the chassis other than new Monroe gas shocks. I believe the stable ride comes from the Jet Co. tag axle and 4 air bags that were OEM in 1997.

Our 38g handles better than the 35u did. I think its because the frame is about 2 feet longer.

When I first got my 96 it was a #2. After I learned a little from this forum I installed the Urethane sway bar bushings and it became a #3.5. I recently found the steering damper was worn out and changed it, have not drove it since expecting a #4.

I have a 2000 Fleetwood pace arrow on a 99 20500LBS F53 chassis. I really don't have any complaints with the ride. I set the cruise at 60 MPH and I have not had any issues with sway or getting pushed by semi's passing me. I have actually seen them go left of me but I don't know if that is driver or them getting pushed. Some of the pot holes do sound horrific and there is some lean on turns. I do plan on the CHF to see what that does and due to age thinking of new shocks. However I am fine with it over all.

I consider ours a 3. Replaced OEM with Bilsteins (big diff.) and all new Goodyear's.

Ours is a #3. Put poly bushings front & rear. Blue Ox trac bar rear and air bag helpers on front with 25# of air. It's still a sail boat not a race car.

There is too much of a jump from your 3 to 4. Our 34' Surf Side is probably a 3.6.
Trucks are not a problem, high cross winds are more of an issue, but we will stop if it gets uncomfortable. We have Bilsteins all around and what I think is a factory steering damper (has no name on it). It suits me as it is.

No mods, stock shocks. It rides and handles just as I'd expect a big box would. This is my second Ford class A gasser and I have no complaints at all
