ScanGauge XGauge Codes for Transmission Gear

(This is a re-post from an old post - that still puzzles me):

Speaking specifically about my 2018 24K F53 chassis with 3 valve 6.8L V10 engine and TorqShift 6 speed Transmission "6R140":

I want to be able to see what gear my transmission is using at any given time, especially in mountain driving situations. About two years ago I installed a ScanGauge II and it works great, and I learned how to set up "XGauges" with help from the ScanGauge customer service and by reading the manual.
Customer Service provided the following codes to "tell what gear the transmission is using", but they do not seem to work (I get no reading on the gauge).
Gear Postition (#)
TXD: 07E0221E12
RXF: 0462051E0612
RXD: 3008
MTH: 000100010000
NAME: GER

The ScanGauge website also provides the following codes for "Transmission Gear ratio", which I also have tried with no reading on the gauge.
Transmission Gear Ratio
TXD: 07E022163B
RXF: 04624516063B
RXD: 3008
MTH: 00C8007F0000
NAME: GR

Mike8253 responded to my original post and came close to a solution, but I couldn't figure it out.

My Question: Can anyone advise how to use the ScanGauge to tell what gear the transmission is operating in? Is there another XGauge code that will give this info in some manner?
Thanks,

I use TorquePro also. Unfortunately for the OP it is totally different in the functions. Also the year makes a big difference as well as the transmission. I was successful in getting mine to work on a '15 F53 after using a diesel code for TorquePro.

TorquePro seems to be able to identify what gear is being used;
** but can anyone advise how to use the ScanGauge to tell what gear the transmission is operating in (in a 2018 F53, V10, 6 speed transmission)?
Thanks,

There is a Ford Truck Enthusiasts website/forum (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php) that might be of some help for you. Maybe have a look there. Scan Gauge might also have a Users site.

Thanks Mike. I'll try those two forums/sites. I also sent a message to ScanGauge in hopes they may help this time.
Thanks,

I've had 3 V10s and 3 Scan Guages. None of them would show gear.
Input and output shafts have to have a speed sensor. Ford probably doesn't.

Why can TorquePro show it then?

Ford does have speed sensors on the input and output. They have had them since 1999.

You don't need speed sensors to be able to read the gear, just the gear ratio. The PCM has a commanded gear PID and that will report what gear the transmission is currently in. I think it would be easier to read then trying to report actual gear ratio from the speed sensors.

Mark, I'm not fully grasping what you are saying here, but it sounds like ScanGauge should have a way to see what gear it is in. Do you know how to read the commanded gear PID? (I do not understand PCM and PID).
ScanGauge gave me a set of codes to try as an XGauge setting, but it did not work. I called them back and they will work on it and get back to me. If they come up with anything that will work I will let everyone know.
This last set of codes that did not work are:
Gear Postition (#)
TXD: 07E0225A7A
RXF: C462055A367A
RXD: 3008
MTH: 000100010000
Thanks,

I have never used ScanGuage and don't know how it works. My experience is with the engineering tools when I worked with this at Ford.

PCM = Powertrain Control Module. This is the computer that runs the engine and transmission and has the data you are looking for.

PID = Parameter IDentification. These are the names of the parameters that can display the information.

The engineering tools I had allowed me to select PIDs to display. One that I always had displayed was GR_CM, which was what gear the PCM was commanding to the transmission.

To the OP, for clarity, TorquePro uses PIDs to read the data. ScanGauge does not use PIDs from what I have seen. They have a different protocol or interface to read data.

I finally have it! The below codes do work for my 2018 F53 to tell me what gear I am in at all times. This is the last set of codes that ScanGauge sent me to try, and they work. Hopefully they will help someone else who wants to know what gear is being used at all times.

Thanks,
Great, going to try them on my 2017 E450 6 speed.
