Trans Temp Indicator
I was wondering if any of you have added an aftermarket temperature indicator for a 2007 5R110. I recently made a 2500 mile trip in fairly hot weather. I would've liked to have a real time transmission temperature indicator in the cab.
I'm looking for recommendations on is it worth it, a good sensor indicator unit, & the pain and aggravation of indicator installation.
Thanks in advance

Following. Our previous MH had digital read out on trans temp. Our new on does not and would like to put one on. Same preventative measures as a TPMS.

Sorry.. I can't see make and model of rv chassis.. what eng and trans you have? I added one for less than 100.00 and I took more time to figure where I wanted it.. then to put on.. just hit favorite on line store .. trans temp gauge and make your choice.. oh you need hole saw something like 2 1/16 in.. it will be in the instructions.. call dealer and how much a new trans and labor to get one .. real big $$$$$$$ .. I think it's very important to watch trans temps.. because 99% rv is nothing but a light truck bolted to big frame.. good luck and let us know what you did and maybe better members then me will help you

Zeke,
The scan gauge is a good source for a reader of almost everything you'd need to drive safely and be informed.
It connects to your OBDII port and keep it attached all the time. It's reasonably priced and they have very good customer service. I sent mine back after 2-3 years of use since it quit working. They fixed it and shipped it back for free.
I actually cut a hole in my dash so it's permanent for me. There are others out there but the SG does what I want it to do so I'm good. I read alternator output, tranny and coolant temperatures as well as fuel mileage. You can read 4 outputs at a time.

X2 on the ScanGauge. Customer service is amazing. Mine is about 12 years old. Purchased to monitor transmission temperature on a 5.7L Toyota that I used to tow with extensively. My ScanGauge has been basically rebuilt free of charge when the backlight stopped working as well as software updates and a replacement cable for only small fees.
BTW, When transferred to my 2006 5R110 RV, I find the transmission temperature to be very consistent and stable, and only slightly greater than coolant temperature. No real need to frequently monitor. Completely different than the Toyota.
I do find it very useful to continuously monitor the engine load (LOD) reading. Helps to predict/anticipate downshifts from 5th to 4th and to use the most engine throttle without a downshift.
Good Luck, your results may vary.

The ScanGuage II is great, as noted. I think there are a few different models. Make sure you get one that can add custom PID’s too. I know the SG II does.

Ditto on the ScanGauge II. I got it for this specific purpose and now use it for other readings also. It is great. You can just use velcro to affix it to the dash, if you're lazy like me, or install to look nice.
Thanks,

ScanGauge II and mounting window/dash mount
Been using ScanGauge II for years on our Class A and love it. It monitors a lot of things—that you choose to monitor—and displays 4 of them at a time. Simply push the menu button to see the next set of items. I've got mine programmed to just the first 4 items: Coolant temp, transmission temp, miles per gallon and the charging rate to my batteries. You can also go to their website and get more codes called X-Gauges, to expand what you want to monitor. It's easy to do, but if you need any help their CS is great.
There's an option for a suction cup type mount and I put that on the dash and then simply plug the OBD II cable into the side of the ScanGauge and run the other end under the dash and plug it into the OBD II port near the steering column and it just stays plugged in all the time. Installed couldn't be any easier. It's a great tool to keep an eye on things while underway. Whenever you start the RV, it immediately comes on and begins to monitor and display the first 4 things you want to see.
Here's what I'm talking about :

We installed an electric temp gauge on our 1997 Ford E4OD transmission using the installed factory test plug. It runs about 5 degrees hot when checked with an infrared temp gun. We also installed a larger trans cooler with an electric fan and auto temp sensor (on @ 185f, off @ 165f). In addition to that we put a manual fan switch next to the gauge.
All of this was after smoking a trans due to heat. Hope this helps.

I watch an interview on dave Letterman.. yes that old.. with bill ford jr.. and he stated they only make their cars to last 3yrs.. after that .. we don't care.. the public should buy a new car every 3yrs.. then went on to say.. to dave.. you just try to make a car .. then sell it to the public and make a profit on it.. and stay in business for as long as ford has.. I my opinion ford runs the trans too hot.. do a Google search for oil temp versus trans life.. the OEM. Coolers are just too small.. if you want to get more than 3yrs out of it.. that is why , when I bought a new 1993 e150 in 93, I added 20,000 pound , tow rating.. transmission oil cooler.. and still my daily driver today.. along with regular oil changes .. also when new add eng oil cooler.. now... if gets below 0.. I cover them.. maybe once or twice a year.. so think about adding coolers.. oh.. don't worry about those who say.. that is too cold.. never seen it in 50 yrs working on vehicles.. but I have seen countless engines and trans burn up.. wonder why.. just look it up.. good luck and keep us posted.. just an old man's opinion..
