V10 engine hesitation from full stop

1999 fleetwood storm, Ford V10 engine hesitates repeatedly from standing start. I have to shift down to 1st gear, then up to 2nd and Drive to get a smooth acceleration.
No other engine or tranny problems indicated.

Been that way for several years.
Feels like a transmission/engine coordination problem?
Any ideas please.

First think that comes to mind is maybe low fluid pressure at engine idle. A line pressure test is pretty simple.

Are filter(s) original and when was the last time the fluid was changed?

Hello, is there a check engine light associated with this? Does your check engine light come on when you turn the key on to start your rig? I ask beause this is essentially a bulb check to make sure the check engine light works. If no check engine light I would pull a couple of plugs and look at them to determinbe how the engine is running. Also, you don't state how many miles are on this particular model and I don't know where the fuel filter is located on this year model. Another suggestion is the mass air flow sensor. and oxygen sensors. The aforementioned will definitely turn the check engine light on if malfunctioning. Let us know what you find out and good luck.

There are two very common reasons for this on the V10. The first is a bad IAC valve. Thats an Idle Air control valve. These go bad and you start losing vacuum at idle and you get those symptoms. Another thing to check is the PCV valve and especially the rubber hose that deteriorates and gets a big leak over time. Another issue is look on the back of the engine and you will see a number of small plastic lines with rubber connectors on them. The rubber connectors at the top of these lines also crack and you will get those symptoms. I don't know the maintenance history but with a rig that old it's best to go through it and do all the routine maintenance as well.

Unplug egr valve. Then give it a try.. yes that will set code.. ignore it.. test drive.. egr valve needs cleaned along with IAC. And throttle body..you will need 10 bucks for 3 gaskets.. maybe 10 in cleaner that assumes you done all basic tune up.. many vids on you tube
Good luck and keep us posted

I had the IAC and PCV hose and valve replaced a few years ago but I did notice that the idle is intermittently running a little high recently in park, up around 1100 rpm and pulsing a bit and I thought perhaps the IAC is bad again. I will review the situation, thanks!
