I haven’t read the above thread but fyi, Some steering boxes have slack adjusters. A stud sticking out of the side with a lock nut. “three miles” of wear might be past tightening up though.

yes I know but no adjustment that I can find It is bad enough that a hard wind will move you over out of your lane before you have time to react it only has 40000 miles on it

Check the rear suspension for cracked arms.

On my 2004 Ambassador the steering box is a Sheppard M100. All the part numbers were located just above the pitman arm where it attaches to the box itself. I had to take a wire brush to it and use a mirror to see it. Hopefully yours is much easier to remove and reinstall than mine was. I ending up buying a small tranny lift from harbor freight ( rated for 450 lbs ) that was a game changer. Also, you’re in bullhead city so the place I listed in this post to get it rebuilt is in Phoenix. Once you figure out make and model, call him and he should be able to answer any questions you have.
Also, on my set up, there are 2 universal joints in the actual steering column that required being greased over the years. Mine were okay, but if they’re worn out, that could also be a source of the 3” of play

Rebuild
I mentioned before in my post, but realized the info I spoke of was on a different thread.
I had my box rebuilt at A.R.E. (Automotive rebuilders express )
They are in Glendale az. 602 842 9628
They rebuilt my M100 and I am thrilled with the quality of workman’s ship. It would be worth the call to at least talk to them about what is going on. I think I paid around $450 dollars for the rebuild.
