When camping out, we often ask: "What star or planet is that?" Is there something online that quickly and easily maps out the night sky so we can tell what we are looking at? Not something overwheliming, but simple for amateures. Also, many years ago I purchased a refractive telespcope. I think it was a 600 power. The instruction booklette mentioned the rings of Saturn. Well,,, the more you crank up the power, the darker things get and almost to total blackout at night. And the planets are moving fast across the field of view.

I kept it for a few weeks and took it back.

I have Google Sky Map on my Motorola X. This lets me point my phone to the sky and it tells me what I am looking at 0 pretty cool.

No problem. I missed your pictures the first time around. Nice looking club and viewing grounds. Is that your rig setting next to the building?

We missed it due to rain, but we needed it. Our drought is pretty bad in PA. Anyone have a good show?

Perseid update

The Tampa skies were clear for the most part and the Meteor shower was very good considering the light pollution.

The wife saw 15 and I saw 9 in a little over two hours from 3:30 to 5:45. Well worth getting up a little early

I thought I posted about this a few min.'s ago. So I'll post again. What kind of set-up did you use for the pics?

I'm strictly P & S

I had my Canon XTi set on a tripod, the lens was set for 18 mm, trying to capture the widest area of the sky. I used ISO 800, set the camera for continuous shooting at 30 seconds.

The biggest problem I had was with dew. One of these days I'm going to invest in a dew heater for my camera lens.

A blow dryer works a well too. Off to the side of course to where you can't see the glowing coils.

Good idea, I forgot about the use of a blow dryer

I did finally use one of those hand warmers, the chemical kind. I placed one under the front of the lens and with the heat radiating up it did a pretty good job of keeping the dew off.

Has anyone else done any more astronomy lately? Seen anything cool to you? B.T.W. coming in October you all might be able to see Comet Hartley 2! Hartley 2 will be close (less than 1 degree south) to Cassiopeiae (the "W" in the sky) and the double cluster on the 9th! It will be as close as 0.12 A.U.'s from us here on Earth, which will be 11 million miles. I'm planning on going out to my clubs astronomy site on that night. I hope some of you have a CCD camera (or a video camera) and a telescope will be able to take a shot when it's that close to the Dbl cluster. S&T (Sky & Telescope) has an article about it in the October issue page 56.

Clear Skies,
StarGazer
