Rock/Gem hunting in the SW/NW US

While my wife and I were in the UP we collected a bunch of beautiful rocks along the beach area.
Now we are headed for an extended trip to the southwest and northwest united states. Anyone out there that can give information to finding such items???????????

Thanks in Advance
