2003 Newmar DS Spartan cruise control won't turn on
Well last trip the cruse quit working, thought it might be in the smart wheel but when we got home I did a trouble shooting on the module and it and the wheel are working fine all relays work on all functions and wiper controls on the right side work good. Have checked all fuses anyone have any ideas?

Check all of your lights. This is often linked to the brake lights. On some vehicle electronics, If any of those are out, cruise control will not operate.

On my Spartan chassis there are two switches on the brake pedal. On controls the brake lights the other cancels the cruise. Check these for proper adjustment.

I had just picked up a 98 DS 3865 earlier this year. the previous owner installed a bunch of LED bulbs and lamp assemblies. the British made cruise control was totally nonfunctional as the LEDs didn't allow the voltage on the cold side of the + circuit for brake lights to drop to ground state. interesting to note that I installed a hitch brake light assy with incandescent lamps in it and the problem went away. several other issues involving the left turn signal canceling the CC when running lights are on. I'm going to strip out the wiring the young lad had done on the LEDs and do it right to solve that issue. some of the lights are on whenever the key is in run. interesting winter projects ahead. but for now, after a 4,500 trip to NH and back to CO, the old cruise control is operating very accurately and hold set speed quite well.

I was just cruzin through here on spartan due to the fact that my next dp might be on a spartan, had a couple of monaco roadmasters( terrible chassis), any way just to add something here to the cc issue, ford chassis use the brake light circuit as a pull up resistor so the cc system will cancel when brakes are apied, ford sends a "trace voltage" through the stoplamp cicuit to insure its working. I have had to help out some ford chassis where the customer installed led taillamps AND center mounted stop lamp, just leave the case as indacasent and cc will work.

thanks for the reply but have not installed leds, well not in taillights. My brother in law has insight and we will check it out with it and see what the problem is. Will check back when problem found (hopefully). God bless and have a happy thanksgiving. OH AND BUY THE WAY WE LOVE THE SPARTAN CHASSIS, I HAVE HAD FL AND RM AND THIS IS A VERY WELL ENGINEERED CHASSIS AND COACH.

Spartan cruise control
Have a 1998 mountain Aire with a Spartan mountain master chassis. Had the throttle cable replaced and lost the cruise control. Garage that replaced it says they have no knowledge of the cruise control and didn’t think they messed with it while replacing throttle cable. Are the two connected and what should I look for?

Finally Repaired
I have a 2005 Dutchstar and the smartwheel system started to intermittently fail on my coach. I went throught the entire system, replaced the encoder and clock spring. Same issue. Reaching out for technical help was no help.
What little help I did get, no one discussed the little circuit board located under the horn bar. This is where the 5VDC- 10VDC reference voltage is generated. I went "old school" by checking the solder joints on this board. I re-soldered several joints for the PIC chip that is used to tell the encoder box what to do.
Now have over 7,000 miles and more than 6 months and the system works flawlessly.
It is not LED lights. The entire coach has LED's with no issues. Bottom line is crappy solder joints. Good luck.

I also had the same thing happen. Your post sounds like I should have written it. I am currently looking for a fuse which my owners manual says it has, but I can’t find.

Thanks for all the replies I think I found the problem.I went through the troubleshooting on the smart wheel at first the cruse on circuit quit working then the wipers and then the horn so the master needs replacing. Checked the wiring up through the clock spring and it is good, and mine does not have the circuit board in the wheel so the 2005 must use a different master. I am calling Spartan in the morning, some one said they use a different master.
