To keep the stud from rotating use thick leather to cover the jaws of the plyers. That will save the threads of the stud as you use an open-end wrench to tighten/loosen. The gage of wire can give you a good idea of how much current is going through this relay. Kind a looks like the horn or condenser relay in my "money pit" RV = 1994 37' HR DP.
Just a note: relays are used to control high current switching to keep that high current wire length to a minimum by a low current control lead. Not only is there less loss but less copper (I hope) wire is needed. 12 volts DC is small pressure. Can't afford much loss @ that voltage.

There should be a part number or a spec on that solenoid somewhere. I would find it and save it for future reference.

You should never try to remove or tighten the INNER NUT, and NOT over-tighten the outer NUT, as that can spin the internal bolt head= CONTACT; it VOIDS warranty on NEW units, so I would REPLACE SOLENOID; (suspect it is a CHARGE SOLENOID, based on wire-side? Recently read a MB chassis owner found theirs there, too?) I agree when they said they thought "terrible location for electric". My 2000 charge solenoid under hood, firewall, front of drive and BOOST solenoid Under step. BOTH NEED to be "CONTINUOUS DUTY RATED" or coils will overheat/ fail in short time. Good Luck

Twinboat, suspect NOT starter, as wire looks like only #10, so maybe 30a= STEPS or CHARGE? Possibly a SLIDE OR JACK?

Starter relays are common on diesel engines.

The big starter mounted solenoid draws 10 to 15 amps. Thats to much current to run all the way from the key and neutral safety switch up front.
They add a relay ( solenoid) back near the batteries and engine and short cut the higher amp circuit.
The wiring is just about the right size for that.

As Twinboat said in #11. If engine starts now remove one wire and try starting again. If it won't start you can assume it is a starter relay. If engine starts with wire removed start checking for something else that is not working.

Also as said earlier, there and several kinds of relays and numerous load ratings on relays. You need to find a part number or find what this one controls before you purchase another relay.

Update

Sorry for the long delay. Just got the relay from Spartan Monday. Multiple out of town family over many days of Thanksgiving put a major delay in anything RV related.

Twin boat is correct, it is the starter relay. I did as suggested, took one wire off and tried to start. It did not. Installed new and tested.

Replaced the relay as recommended by all. Cole Hersee p/n 24023, rate for both intermittent and continuous duty. Looks like intermittent is the primary use. Specs: https://www.lvelectronics.com/images/pdf/24023.pdf

See pictures.

Thanks to all that helped in this endever. I learned and that is a good thing.

May I suggest to drill out the rivets holding the top on the old one? Then you can see the terminal connection you rotated and the internal workings.
EDIT: Oh, and FYI that part number is only intermittent duty. 10 sec. ON; 20 min. OFF.

Hi OldWEB,

Thanks for the information. I'm curious also. I would like to see the connection inside. Since this relay still works, I'm going to keep it on board as a spare. Thanks for the good suggestion though.

Good Deal for both. Mine from Spartan was $20, but GROUND shipping was $24. I probably could have gotten an equivalent at my local FleetPride, 30 minutes away, but spartan could not give me specs just a p/n. Since then I found the specs, but FleetPride sells different brands and form factors. I didn't want to drill in the frame. So expensive, but easy.
