Can someone identify this part on chassis, passenger side by the exhaust?
I was going through electrical connections, especially grounds as PM. On this part I noticed the black wire connection was not tight. I took it apart, cleaned it up. Moving on to the next white wire connection, two nut's, plus locking washer. After removing the first nut, wire and washer, with a socket on the second nut the threaded post started to rotate. That was a little concerning. I stopped cleaned first nut, wire and put it back together, making sure the inside nut was tight. It appears the second inside nut locks the post to the module, but not positive. I assume but not sure this is just the way it's designed for the internal connection. Hopefully this explanation is clear enough.
Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks.

You are correct that the inside nut is to hold the post/stud in place. What type of connection is inside? You would have to look but generally you do not want to rotate the stud a great deal, unless you do know the type of connection inside. It could be attached (soldered) to the stud or may have a ring terminal (like the outside).
So if (or should I say when) you change one of these relays, take it apart and have a look. The relay pictured looks like one that comes apart, they can be cleaned up inside and even get a few more miles out of them.

Thanks OldWEB. Kind of my assumptions as well. I didn't let it rotate much, but it did, maybe 90-180 degrees. I am hoping to get enough description to research a part # that shows an exploded view of that part.

I have a solenoid that looks quite a bit like that one. It is for the battery disconnect connected to the “salesman switch”. Mine has two fuses, semi-hidden, on the bottom, that lets current flow to the radio, (memory) steps.

That’s a $20 part that any decent automotive shop will have.
If there’s any question about it’s integrity just replace it.

I thought I could find some better description too... no luck. I also see that this style may have the top riveted on, so it would come apart, but for the cost of it, just disposable.

Depending on what purpose it serves, be sure to get the correct replacement:
Amp rating-- going higher is a good idea-- more contact surface, not much more $$
Constant duty vs intermittent duty. Likely constant duty unless for starter.
And, yes, if that small terminal rotated 180 degrees, assume the solenoid is bad. It goes to the coil that closes the contacts so the large lugs are in communication with each other.

Thanks Wwolfe10, It can't be very expensive and I will buy a new complete module. I just need to figure what to buy and I would like to know what it control's. Can someone describe a way to test to see if it has lost continuity? I'm leaving on a trip 12/2.

Post are coming in fast. Thanks. Starter or Disconnect? It starts and runs so maybe the disconnect, but didn't see any fuses. Anyway Ideals to the right part and ratings? It is in storage, a little ways away, maybe some markings on it didn't see.

It's your starter relay..
A signal from start position on the key sends 12 volts to it. It sends battery power to the starter mounted solenoid.
Remove any one wire and see if it cranks. Don't let them touch ground.

Thanks Twinboat. I will do that tomorrow. It must still be operational, but should be changed out asap.

You you can't hear it operate .. then hold your hand on it.. have 2nd person operate the salemans switches.. or crank it.. over.. then you can label it with tape..

That is a common Ford style starter solenoid. As has already been said it is available @ any auto parts store for about $20.00. If the stud turned then replace it. Even if it works now it will quit @ the most inopportune time. Murphys Law.
