Changing Wix 533242 Fuel Filter

I wanted to change this Fuel Filter today on the M/H that I just purchased. It's a 2000 Damon Escaper w/ a Spartan M/M Chassis. I loosened the water drain valve to get some fuel out so I could change the filter thinking that after draining a quart or so the filter would be empty. After draining out over a gallon of diesel, I was afraid to take the filter off for fear of a flood. I don't understand why so much fuel is draining out. Can someone enlighten me as to the proper procedure for this?

You're siphoning from the lift pump back to the tank, perfectly normal. Keep a bucket right underneath and spin it off, it will stop once the vacuum is broken. Before you put the new one back on lubricate the rubber O-ring with some engine oil and fill the filter with fresh filtered diesel. If you're lucky you will be able to restart the engine without having to reprime anything. Your Cummins owners manual will explain how to reprime if necessary - its easy.
