Help with Dessicant Cartridge Replacement

I'm attempting to replace the cartridge on the coach. Not having much luck. So far I have managed to turn the cartridge about 1/8" and make a couple of dents in the cartridge with the strap wrench.

I have a web strap wrench that napa sold me. I've never used one before so I can't guarantee I'm using it correctly.

At any rate, the cartridge on this coach is in a spot that is pretty restrictive. No chance of using a cheater bar on the wrench, and not much room to maneuver the wrench handle due to two storage bays that intrude into the workspace.

Does anyone have any first hand experience changing this cartridge on this chassis? I could sure use some advice.

Thanks,
Ed

This may sound silly , but you didn't mention the air dryer brand, or if you have changed the filter before. Most owners end up removing the dryer from the frame for access.
There are two types in common use, one has the spin on filter the other the filter housing bolts on.
Both are described in this document.
Or, check out Fireup's pictures posted in this thread.

Not silly at all, Skip. Thanks for replying.

I have a Wabco Meritor unit. The cartridge says it's a replacement, but I've had the coach 3+ years and this is the first time I'm trying to replace it.

I also should have mentioned that there is no air in the system. I pulled all the lanyards and nothing is coming out.

Help with Dessicant Cartridge Replacement

Ed,

I've changed that cartridge a couple of times but on a Roadmaster chassis.

Remember, since it's up side down from how you would normally use a strap wrench that you turn in the opposite direction. If you were on your back looking up you would turn the wrench clockwise to loosen.

I use the same NAPA strap wrench head with an 18" extension and a 24" ratchet head breaker bar. It's a tough one but it will come off.

Ed, I wish I had that kind of access around my dryer.
I've got , trans, drive shaft and differential all in the way.
Mine will have to come out , even if I got the filter off, getting the new filter on , with out knocking crud into the dryer wouldn't be possible.
I hope Steve's info helps.

Success!

Steve, understanding the tools I needed were the key. Thanks to both you and Skip for helping out.

Glad to help Ed. You would have figured it out yourself.

Thanks for your service.

I have to remove 2 of the 3 mounting bolts holding the base to the frame-rail. Then pivot the unit towards an opening to remove the Meritor filter. It's easier to clean off the crud after it's tilted too, but I loosen the filter a bit before removing those 2 bolts.
