Suspension stops

Hello everyone,
I’m looking at a 1997 Newman Dutchstar to purchase. When the airbags are deflated I noticed that the front tires are hitting the inner fenders. Shouldn’t there be some kind of bump stop to prevent this from happening, seems like a safety issue if an airbag blew out. Thank you for any input

Most of the coaches out there will hit the wheel openings if the wheels aren't straight ahead..

Thank you for your reply, the wheels are pretty much straight ahead, maybe slightly off, is that still normal?

Do you have the correct original size tires? Check the placard for what belongs and compare to what you have. Someone may have upsized them.

Is normal for my 98 American Eagle riding on the Spartan Mountain Master chassis. Chance of complete deflation while under way is very slim IMHO.

A blow out. When I had one it took out the airline to the air bag.

My body doesn't sit on the tires when the air bags are deflated. That doesn't sound right.

Air bags can also fail similar to a tire. Hit a large enough road hazard and the impact can pop one.

You’re right, it call for 75 series on the placard but has 80 series tires on it. They’re like new but 7 years old so I may replace the front two with the right size and see if that helps

In addition to the series, what size should be there and what size do you have? The oversized tires take away form acceleration, hill climbing, and braking performance, and speedometer accuracy.

Inside the air springs is a "bump-stop". to limit downward travel. The bump-stop is a different height, depending on use and chassis design.

The seller says the airbags were just replaced so that may be a clue. I looked at a straight axle spartan chassis and it had several inches of clearance with the suspension down. Thanks for the link to Firestone, lots of good information

It doesn't help that it has larger tires on the front than specified; if you make sure the wheels are straight before dumping the air springs you shouldn't have any contact with the body fender.
