6500 Generator vs 30 amp Power Cord

Friend of mine came cross deal on 99 Fleetwood Discovery DP that he couldn't pass up. Unit has 2 Roof AC's, 30 amp power cord for external power and 6500 LP Onan Gen, I always assumed 30amps would only power one AC at a time, I also think 6500 Gen will run both AC's at one time. this is his first coach, I have a Monaco (50 amp) anyone know how his set up works?

Each a/c unit probably pulls about 1500 watts when running. Start-up draw may be more. So a 6500 watt generator should easily run 2 a/c units.

A 30A 120V service = 3600 watts. I can run 2 a/c compressors on 30A on my coach. The generator is almost 2X a 30A service.

P.S. One can install soft-start kits on a/c units to not pull extra amperage at startup.

Yep! Two RV A/C's should work. However, if the electric water heater automatically turns "on", breakers could trip. The same is true for automatic electric refrigerators.

The battery charge may also work when you don't expect it. Deeply discharged batteries on a 100 amp charger can push current over the edge.

Just think the whole situation through and all will be well.

They installed 5500 watt generators in 30 amp RV with 2 ACs, so one output ( 30 amp ) powers the RV including 1 AC, and the other output was for the second AC only.

Your friends rig may be wired the same way. They may be using a 6500 watt unit because they don't produce 6500 watts on propane.

If it has seperate breakers, Start it and run the ACs. While running, switch off a breaker and see what happens.

It was never designed to run both ACs on 30 amp shore power. There should be a front//rear selector switch.
