What brand steps? The Power Gear/Kwikee steps
have 19 different models, they all stop by the control unit sensing amperage draw, not by a switch. They depend on the owner keeping them clean properly lubricated every month for proper operation.
The plastic discs/washers in the hinges do wear out and allow the hinges to "slop around" and cause problems too.
Those links are very helpful and informative. I use them every time I have a step problem; main reason is, I forget what I read from one time to the next.

Thanks for the suggestion about the chattering of the single tread step on my Coachman Concord RV, but I still cannot solve the problem. Step chatters 5-7 seconds after being fully retracted. Batteries are tested and they are fine. Any assistance will be appreciated.

If by chattering you mean they bounce in and out a few inches then in my case it was the motor on my 2006 Lexington 283 GTS purchased a new one on ebay for around $75. works like a champ now.
