fuel mileage...realistically

can anyone tell me the approx fuel mileage for a 41ft crosscountry sport coach with a 400hp cummins w 6 speed trans.GVWR 30000lb.I am trying to decide between gas and diesel Big diff. in price.I would be pulling approx. 3200lb.

We have a 40 foot (33000 lbs) H/R motorhome with a ISL 400hp cummins and average about 8 mpg towing a CRV. That's running hard in the hills of Pa. You will see better on the level or taking your time which we hope to be able to do in a year and a half. Nice motor with lots of power. Test drive them both then decide, I think you will want the diesel .

I have a 2007 Crosscountry, 300 HP 5 speed, I get over 10 MPG towing a Chev Equinox as long as I Keep speed close to 60 MPH. I don't think you would regret the extra cost of the diesel. The ride and power are worth the extra cost.

I have gas and admit I wanted a diesel but don't overlook the cost of maintenance though to be certain it does not affect your decision.

Oil, filter, lube on a gas chassis is about $60 maybe a bit less depending on where you go.

Diesel will be considerably more $300 to $500? Not sure but one of the diesel folks will probably be able to tell you.

Cost of fuel is important too. Mileage a bit better with diesel ( I get 8 in gas coach if I am careful) but not likely to offset higher cost of diesel fuel compared to cost of gas.

I tow a 2012 Jeep Wrangler at about 3500 lbs. with the gas chassis.

Did a quick bit of research and was surprised by the result.

Assuming you can get 8 miles a gal with the diesel; a 250 mile trip would use 31.25 gals of diesel fuel at an average cost (May 2013) of $3.88 for a total cost of $121.25.

Now for the gasser. Assuming 7.5 miles a gallon (some folks post getting 10 but I've never gotten that high a mileage); same 250 mile trip you would use 33.33 gals of gas at an average cost (May 2013) of $3.64 for a total cost of $121.33.

Virtually identical, what a laugh. So you can save a full 8 cents every 250 miles on the clock assuming the factors are constant. LOL That was really a surprise to me I was certain the diesel would cost more in fuel but I guess not, at least based on May 2013 average fuel costs.

We've got a 34' National Dolphin with the Vortec 8.1 gas engine. On a trip last summer from Reno to Sturgis we averaged 7.5 mpg over the entire trip. We were pulling 2 ultra classics at about 850 lbs each on the trip there, and a single ultra classic on the return trip.

We wanted a diesel, but the one we were trying to get sold the morning we were heading to the dealer to purchase. We're not dissapointed with the gasser we've got. Still looking to go diesel one of these days though.

Every MH/toad set-up will provide different scenarios. Here is mine.

My honest mileage is worst/best 10.5/12.3 over all road conditions. Average 11.5.

2011 Serrano Fred, 2012 Wrangler toad, total weight ~23,500

At 17K miles and still improving during break-in period. Annual maint about $550. Gas maint was about $150. That is 2 annual services, oil, filter, fuel filters (diesel only), chassis lube.

About 35% mpg improvement over my previous gassers at 8.5

Can you get a 41 footer with a gas engine? We get 8 easily pulling our toad. That is average. Probably closer to 8.5

Diesel is diesel and gas is gas. No comparison in ride quality and power. You buy a diesel because you want a diesel, you can't justify it. I would give up RVing if I had to go back to a gasser.

I don't think you would ever get close to 7.5 MPG in a 40' gas MH pulling 3,200 behind it.

We bought a gas 2013 Coachmen Mirada 34bh in December. For us, price of diesel was just not in the cards. (We don't do ALL of our annual vacations in the coach so didn't put all of our eggs in that basket).

To me though, you buy a diesel because you like the better ride and ability to have heavier hardware, more storage (pushers don't have a drive shaft down the entire length so more storage), and that sort of stuff. The Diesel engine enables a much heavier unit, so you'll see things like ceramic tile flooring instead of linoleum--its that sort of stuff that I think is the important factor for a purchase decision.

As others have already said, the MPG is largely offset by the difference in $PG.

I have to agree but then I've never seen a 40 foot gas coach. Longest gas rig I've seen is just short of 38 feet, most are in the 34 to 36 range.
