I have a question. What is the standard hourly install amount recommended by SMI to dealerships to install the coach portion of an Air Force One? My dealer tried to charge me 3.5 hours just to install on the tow vehicle. I talked them down to 2.5 hrs but I am a novice and installed the towed vehicle side in less time than that.

Hi RV-Writer,
Thank you for your reply. Our recommended installation time for the Air Force One is 4 hrs. We consider this to be a national average. There will be some dealers that are at a higher rate and some at a lower rate. That said, if we do the installation we hold to this "national average", and we typically split the install to 2.5 hrs for the towed side and 1.5 hrs for the coach side.
On a side note, I may be able to to direct you to some other dealers in your area. I would be glad to assist in any way I can. You are welcome to reply, PM, or call in to our support team.

Thanks for the reply. They installed it already and I talked them down to 2.5 hrs. They said they had to add some parts under the RV. I was pretty sure your kit had everything needed so once I find out what parts they had to supplement I will reply here.

I was pretty satisfied with the kit and install was easy as well on the car side. I called your team a couple of times and received great support during install. I haven't yet hooked the car to the coach to test things out, but expect to do that in the next few weeks.

Great product and support.

Jim

Hey Jim,

Here in Northern California I paid for 4 hours labor on the AF1 installation, and 3 hours for the base plate and wiring. The labor rate was $110, per hour. My dealer was on something, they wanted 12 hours labor. I got 4 bids and went with the most feasible deal.

I really enjoy the AF1. If I had anything to say, it would be that the brake indicator light (the light on the back of my toad rear view mirror and what I see in my cockpit camera) could be bigger. It's hard to see in direct sunlight, I get that it needs to be small to attach to the mirror.....it's really not that big of a deal, once you know what to look for.

Happy Trails!

Hi Stiltner,
Thanks for passing along your experiences. In some cases the LED may be difficult to see. While we do not currently have a large LED, there are options available to help with that. First option would be to add a wire or use an existing wire to locate the LED indicator on the dash of the coach. The second option would be to purchase our wireless CoachLink™ system. This would get the "brakes applied" signal to the dash of the coach without any wires. The wireless CoachLink™ system is compatible with both the Air Force One and Stay In Play DUO systems. You can check out the product info here. https://smibrake.com/wireless-coachlink.php
