04 Mirada 30QB Wire burn smell after ac turned on

After starting engine and turning on ac I heard a hobbling sound from ac compressor and observed smoke coming from passenger front side of engine just above compressor area. Anyone else experience this type of problem?

Had a similar thing happen years ago when the clutch coil in the AC compressor shorted out internally. Compressor shaft was still free wheeling but sometimes the damage can freeze it. Engine will still spin and drag the serpentine belt over the pulley there on AC but eventually it will be ruined and break.

So, disconnect one of the 2 wires going to the AC compressor, verify the pulley turns freely, and take it to a shop unless you're a DIY HVAC guy.
