I have a friend with a charter boat business in Kona, he just repowered his boat with 3208 Cat's at 18,000 hours! That has to be a close equivalent to 500,000 in RV miles, understanding that boats and RV's underway, are always climbing a mountain! Like previously stated here, the house will go long before the below decks, if the below decks are maintained to spec.

18,000 hours is around 1,000,000 miles. I have a. 7.3 with 8,000 hours, 400,000 miles and it doesn’t see freeways very often.

As mentioned above get an oil and coolant analysis. Have a reputable, factory authorized, shop look the engine over.
As also mentioned above, plan on the little stuff to start requiring maintenance. A well maintained OTR diesel engine, even if held to the floor the whole time, should last 500k miles before needing a rebuild. They are amazingly durable, but particularly apt to fail due to poor maintenance.

I wouldn’t be afraid of it but I would be aware. You aren’t buying a new motorhome. I had 160,000 miles on the Beaver Marquis 60,000 in 8 years by me. I got no records and unless you buy from an original ana_ owner ( recommended) you won’t find much. I just totaled my expenses and not including fuel and insurance it was over 50 grand when it left me , I had a list of 20grand more I wanted / needed to spend. The “engine” wasn’t a problem ever.
However…The turbo , radiator , CAC (charge air cooler)airbags leveling system air conditioner both engine and house , aquahot boiler. Paint , seals , leaks etc etc etc were.
Anything over 100,000 miles isn’t eligible for any service contracts for a reason. The older it is the more other systems will fail or need updates. Any coach will have these . If you do all your own work it helps and almost becomes necessary. Million dollar coaches require million dollar mindset maint. JMO. From my experience. Like most rv’s boats etc I had a love hate relationship more love than hate.. we were sorry ( kinda) to see it go.

It was a guess, but frankly, most of those hours are at 8 knots trolling, call it 1000 RPM, so very quiet hours, so you may very well be right!

When I traded in my 2008 Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins in 2017, it had almost 300,000 miles on it and still going strong. It was sold within a couple of weeks and in 2021, the guy who purchased was still running it.

Unless the chassis never was maintained I'd be more concerned about the house and appliances. Most motor homes with 100,000 miles are going to be 20+ years old. That's a lot of time for even a small leak to do serious damage. It's also past the life expectancy of most RV appliances. Once you spend time in it, no matter how good the condition you'll start to see things you wish were different.

Cool story ! Nothing works an engine harder than a boat.

Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance
I have been in the construction business for over 40 years and when it come to diesal engineers we are never concerned about something with 100K miles on it as long as its been maintained.
My personel experience bears this out. In November we bought a 2000 Monoco Diplomat with a 315 Cummings engine and an Allison transmission with 97K plus miles on it. We were bound to stick to a budget so thats what we got.
First thing I did was take it to a very good diesal mechanic and said go through it and lets develop a baseline. Original quote was $7,500 after it was all said and done it was $16,000. So what started at maintenance ended up with fuel pump, radiator, differential, AC & bearing work. Do I regret it - no. Now I have an engine that has current maintenance and ready to run. And still within my overall budget.
Here is another thought, typically less miles means newer coach, i.e for us maybe a 2005 -2008. Now those coaches cost 10-20K more than we paid for our coach. In the end if they did not maintain the coach properly you could still spend the $7.5 to $16K to get it up to snuff.
Buy from soneone that can show you maintenence records for the last 5 - 10 years. That's someone that took care of their coach. I'd stay away from a dealer at that mileage an just buy PP - chance are the dealer is a second tier dealer and just trying to move a coach. Well, thats my opinion and I'm sticking with it, Good Luck

Navistar Maxxforce.
Some Cummins ISL's built between certain serial numbers: https://www.irv2.com/forums/f123/isl...ge-180891.html
I'm sure there are others. Yes, generally a diesel is more reliable but the actual details do matter.
A friend called me with a great deal on a DP from someone who was no longer using it. It had a Maxxforce engine. He bought it because Navistar "is a big company". He regretted it until he sold it a few years later and took a bath on his "great deal".

If you are looking at Monaco, Country Coach, American Coach etc., I think it may be in mid life. I will expect 200k miles from those. Why? I tried seach these types of coaches with over 200k miles on RVTraders, there aren't much (if at all). But plenty of ones around 100k.
If any lower rank coaches, I am really not so confident about them over 100k.
Of course, it all depends on the maintance like others said. You can't see the inside of the engine for sure, but if it looks relatively rust free, engine sounds ok, not too much soot, exhausts normally, mostly clean it probably is fine.
Lastly, be ready to be dirty. If you are handy, they may still be affordable. Otherwise, expect to spend major money on them. Even my relatively good shape 100k Monaco Windsor have problems all the time, small or big. It would cost me more than the worth of the coach had I hired people to work on it.

I’m curious why you say Monaco’s and others are at mid life at 100k? Cummins are a half a million mile motors.

I would spend some time researching the forums here and make sure you get what you really want. We looked for two years before getting the "right one" for us. You live close to us so I'd recommend you go down to the dealers in Coberg to get a look at a good selection of vintage pushers. For us, we wanted to be pre-emissions, tag axle and no front passenger slide for sure. I really wanted the 500 hp motor and the layout we ended up with. Then you still need to be ready to walk away if it's not in good condition. Look for a cream-puff that's been well maintained and stored indoors.
